“Looper” debate divides The Voice

"This is called The Voice but you're not really a singer." Coaches & contestants question fairness of the contest.

“This is called The Voice but you’re not really a singer,” coach Boy George told singer / looper Sam Perry last night.

“There are a lot of big singers being sent home and you’re in another area.”

The debate was sparked by the Knockout round with Team Kelly artists Sam Perry, Madi K. and Emily Green.

But Boy George was questioning the fairness of the three-way sing-off, in which Perry was able to use his mix desk to create a vocal soundscape.

When Boy George put one of the contestants on the spot, the show reached one of its most interesting points of drama this season.

“I think what Sam does is amazing,” Emily replied.

“I really respect what you do but at the same time I feel like you wouldn’t have the same vocal struggles as someone like me or Madi does, because what you do is so out of the box it hasn’t go the same constraints ….say if you were flat or sharp or you have an off day.

“But in saying that I really respect everything you do. I applaud it, it’s amazing.”

Nine says Sam Perry’s performance falls within the rules of the show, and other international versions have included vocal loopers.

In the end it was bad news for Emily as Kelly chose Sam to remain on her team, and Madi was saved by Team Joe.

  1. What I found quite amusing about the whole situation is the fact after it all Boy George turned around and said if Kelly didn’t take Sam through he would have saved him.!

  2. I have to disagree with Boy George on this one. If everything Sam is doing is using his voice, that makes him the most qualified to be on the show. I will agree that the singing in the Blinds wasn’t the best, but it doesnt change the fact that he’s still looping his own voice to create his backing track. I dont see the issue.
