Picnic at Hanging Rock drops in second outing

Reviews have been generous but has Foxtel's big budget drama polarised audiences?

High profile Foxtel drama Picnic at Hanging Rock has dropped in its second week.

The first episode drew 112,000 viewers according to OzTAM (and another 82,000 in Timeshifting), but last night drew just 44,000 viewers in Overnight data.

However it should be noted Foxtel offered the full FremantleMedia drama to binge via its On Demand service following the premiere.

On social media the tale has polarised audiences with some excited by the casting, costumes and new vision, but others critical of the storytelling and direction. Reviews, including on the Hollywood Reporter and Variety, have been largely positive.

Meanwhile on the weekend Foxtel announced upcoming drama Mr Inbetween is getting a rare screening on FX stateside, as well as a second season in development, whilst leads have been confirmed for Lambs of God filming this week.

  1. I’ve been an ongoing fan of the original book and movie (giving my age away), so was intrigued with the new Production. Unfortunately a lot has been changed maybe to bring in a younger audience, but I think it’s backfired. The original was a massive success to the younger audience back then, so it’s a real shame they’ve changed such a great Australian story.

  2. Way too slow – two hours would have been plenty. It lost me at the opening scene of selecting the building. That should have been a flashback.

  3. I have tried twice to watch this show but have struggled, I’m not one for praising a movie or TV show because its Australian and there have been some well made products which show the way, The Kettering Incident being the most notable. I shall watch it all the way through, eventually.
