Airdate: Detectorists

BAFTA winning UK comedy with Mackenzie Crook & Toby Jones comes to ABC Comedy.

BAFTA winning 2014 UK comedy Detectorists begins tonight on ABC Comedy, which centres around two friends Andy (Mackenzie Crook) and Lance (Toby Jones) who go searching for their hearts’ desire with a couple of metal detectors.

There have been 3 seasons made of this one.

Determined to dig up their very own Saxon ship-burial, a chance encounter with a young history student puts Lance and Andy on the road towards the discovery of a lifetime.

Their friendship is forged in muddy fields, over cold packed lunches and tiny, worthless pieces of metal. They’re an odd couple, each with their own dysfunctional love lives and little secrets. But together Lance and Andy both dream of finding that priceless Saxon hoard that will make them rich and cement their place in detecting history.

As we follow their adventure, real life keeps getting in the way. Over the series greed, betrayal, rejection and finally redemption are all played out as Lance, Andy and friends hurtle towards Danbury Metal Detecting Club’s greatest ever find.

9:45pm Friday on ABC Comedy

  1. I loved it when shown on BBC First over the past three years. Not in your face Comedy actually a beautifully constructed view of mateship and simple things in life. A slow burn must see nicely tucked away lateish on a Friday night.

  2. I haven’t a read a review of this that has been anything less than glowing. Some have put it up there with the very best of British comedy. Should be good!

    1. This is one of those slow gentle UK comedies that really does transcend its pretty simple concept, and leaves you not only smiling but wanting to watch more. Good to see it’s finally getting an airing on Aus TV.

      1. On FTA anyway. BBC First aired it in 2015 and S1 & 2 are Netflix pick of the week in the SMH Guide. The ABC2 needs shows so are raiding the vaults of British broadcasters, finally they have found an excellent one. It will probably be outrated by stripped popular US sitcoms on the commercial secondary channels though.
