SKY News & Nine join forces for business channel?

Speculation is mounting about a new Free to Air business channel.

There is speculation today that Nine and SKY News are joining forces to create the first Free to Air business channel.

Fairfax reports operations will be based in Sydney and will hire a “number of new people”, but will also draw upon existing current affairs and news teams. The channel will also be aired in its entirety on Foxtel, according to the article.

The chatter follows SKY recently confirming a deal to broadcast on Free to Air into WIN TV markets.

No name for the channel has yet been flagged.

SKY News and Nine declined to comment, but the rumour is an announcement is due this month.

Update: The Australian has story as Exclusive, happy to add link (and no, nobody has raised it!).

  1. If they’re going to give us foxtel content can they give us some of the great dramas instead of boring news or business stuff?

  2. I’m looking forward to this, and I live in Adelaide and do not run a business. It would be a nice alternative to ABC news 24 when I just want something on in the background. They do have some good and interesting shows most of which are not on the foxtel catch up service.

  3. Seriously? Do they think people in the Western Suburbs and outside the beltway and in the regions would be at all interested in this? Where do they get these ridiculous ideas from?

    1. Isn’t it generalising to suggest people in western suburbs would not be interested in business? I’m sure they have businesses out there too. Clearly it is niche and pitched accordingly.

    2. And again we “in the regions” branded as some sort of uneducated morons with no interest in business news, commentary, exchange rates, the ASX, etc., etc. Not sure where “the beltway” is, other than the road that encircles Washington DC.

  4. In place of the home shopping channel? Like Racing .com? So not measured for ratings? Though a business/finance channel would be a bit more popular than a horse racing channel, in my view.
