Is The Footy Show the most successful TV show in 25 years?

Sorry Eddie. The numbers don't lie.....

Eddie McGuire recently defended the AFL Footy Show in the wake of falling ratings against Seven’s Front Bar.

The Footy Show has been the most successful show on Australian television for a quarter of a century,” he told the Herald Sun.

But is it true?

McGuire gave no criteria to his claim, so let’s look at ratings for the past 25 years…..

Ratings:

OzTAM people meters were introduced in 2001, changing the way data was measured. Nevertheless, the Sydney Olympics Closing Ceremony pulled the biggest audience of them all at 6.64 million metro viewers. Yowza.

No surprises that Sport is consistently the biggest drawcard across the 25 years, including Melbourne Commonwealth Games, State of Origin, AFL Grand Final, Australian Open and Melbourne Cup.

Amongst non-sporting events, it is Adam Liaw’s 2010 MasterChef win that tops them all. Other big-hitters include Australian Idol, The Block, My Kitchen Rules, Big Brother, The Voice.

While AFL configures throughout, The Footy Show is nowhere to be seen. Not only is it absent from the Top 10 shows, it is out of the Top 50 across the 25 years. Its highest ranking performance was The Footy Show Grand Final edition back in 2003 on 764,000 viewers.

But to be fair the show has next to no audience in NSW or Queensland where it screens late night. Even adding in the NRL edition it still falls short.

Sales:

The Footy Show has screened in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand, but those pale into insignificance against Drama and Reality titles which sell in hundreds of territories, seen by millions of viewers.

Awards:

The Footy Show has been nominated for the Logies Most Popular Sports Program every year since 1996 except 1999, when there was no category, with 8 wins. The NRL Footy Show has 9 wins. TV dramas have a swag of awards including Home and Away (46), Neighbours (31), A Country Practice (29) and Blue Heelers (25).

Timeslot wins:

This one is much harder to compare, but it is where The Footy Show fares best. Nine sources indicated that over the course of its 25 years the show has dominated in its timeslot (9:30pm and 8:30pm). In Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth it indeed holds the crown in its slot. If this is what McGuire was referring to it might have helped to clarify. This year the show pulled is best Melbourne audience back in March at 235,000 viewers. It has won that slot just 4 times this year. Last week it was only 135,000.

But there are other shows in various cities with stellar timeslot wins too including Seven News in Perth, Today Tonight in Adelaide. How do we ignore Four Corners still pulling them in after 50 years on air and still breaking stories?

 Conclusion:

On timeslot wins The AFL Footy Show has strong cred in its 3 markets, despite sliding numbers in recent years. As a successful panel show it has turned over millions in network revenue and that kind of longevity should be acknowledged in a fickle business. But neither does that doesn’t make it the most successful show on Australian television for a quarter of a century. It’s this kind of arrogance that has arguably contributed to viewers turning off.

Finding one show deserving of such a title is nigh on impossible. But it’s hard to look past the success around Home and Away.

After 30 years the show is still competitive in the tough 7pm timeslot. It is watched in more than 140 countries, has more Logie Awards than any single show, ignited multiple star careers and as a Seven-produced show has generated millions in revenue.

  1. Ha. Thought William and Catherine’s wedding would have made it into the top 10 in 2011…
Actually some news events I am surprised not on that list like Diana’s funeral for one or big epsiodes of shows like Lisa McCune’s final ep on Blue Heelers.

    1. Good point! I don’t have full numbers for those years, but it looks like the numbers for Will & Kate’s wedding (split between 2, 7 & 9) were scattered through the bottom half of the Top 20 (~2-2.4M), and it’s a similar story for Diana’s funeral. Both would probably rank in the Top 5 for their years if you could aggregate across networks.

Blue Heelers was definitely on the way down then, but I can’t say what the ratings were for sure – strangely, Maggie died in a non-ratings period. From the numbers I do have, I’m guessing 2-2.5M? Might’ve been enough in a non-Olympics year, but …

        1. I don’t see a problem. If someone makes a grand statement, as Eddie did, he should expect others to scrutinise it. Nothing to do with liking or hating anyone AFAIK. And there were others on social media who also questioned McGuire’s claim.

  2. gee, we really watched any old rot back in the day, didn’t we…Worlds worst drivers and greatest TV commercials featuring in the top 10 shows in various years.

  3. After 25 years of television of course is it’s been a success.Shows never last that long if they don’t have something going for it as like someone else said regarding Hey Hey It’s Saturday.A couple of weeks ago The Footy Show won it’s timeslot, and last week were only just beaten. The NRL version continues to let the team down most of the time only getting half the audience of what the AFL version gets. That has been going on for years and as The AFL Footy Show has soften so has the overall picture. After this successful period i feel people probably are looking for something new as when any other show after a successful run goes through a similar path until it’s axed.Their is still life in this show and they can bounce back.Perhaps bringing back Trevor Marmalaide next year could be the key.The AFL Footy Show still is a great show but the audience now thinks differently. Those people…

    1. Yep exactly and who knows what would have happened with Hey Hey when Ernie Carrol retired and Ossie went if Daryl Somers had of thought at the same time to just produce and hand the show over to an up and coming talent and refreshing it’s format a little.

That’s probably all The Footy Show needs now is a proper refresh, not just a shuffle of hosts and staying with the same old format, the league teams part of it now can often get brushed over because “they are running out of time,” should be the main focus. It also offers something different in that it has current players where as The Front Bar has past ones, take the focus off what was and news/story analysis, that is what Footy Classified is for (unless there is a breaking one that day like a Coach sacked etc).

  4. Yes Eddy the Footy Show has been a success over it’s 25 year lifespan, as was Hey Hey It’s Saturday for 27 years form October 1971 to November 1999 (with a recess in 1978 when they went to Channel 0/10), however there comes a time when a format is past it’s use by date.

  5. Another fantastic article, and well thought out. I was also amazed at the numbers from years gone by – Logies at 2.2m, Kath & Kim at 2.1m…. they can only dream for these figures [outside sport]….

    1. That’s a point I’ve been known to make on occasion ?.

It’s even more amazing when you remember that the population has increased by 15~25% since those years – on that basis alone you’d expect the top-rating shows (outside of sports & ‘event’ finales) should be pulling ~2.5M now, not ~2 or less.

What it suggests is that regular TV viewing peaked somewhere in the late 90’s / early 00’s, and it’s been all downhill ever since. We’re living through and watching the slow death of TV as regular entertainment…

        1. Yup, I’d expect amalgamations as they thrash around attempting to add diversity to TV empires – buying/joining print (as you say & we’ve just seen) seems odd as that’s also a dying medium, but radio’s still kicking for the time being, & internet properties are growing (though fraught with danger of being transient/impermanent until that industry matures).

Mostly, though, I don’t think they’re smart/flexible enough to survive too much longer – they’ve spent too long being too comfortable, and thinking that lobbying to hold off competition until they’re ready is being “innovative”…
