News Breakfast beats Today in Melbourne

Although they tied on the primary channel, there is still the ABC News audience to add to the mix.

The breakfast TV battle last week saw Today in a battle on two fronts, thanks to ABC’s News Breakfast.

In Melbourne on Friday it finished in a dead heat on the ABC’s primary channel at 43,000. But with another 20,000 watching on ABC News, Nine was beaten.

Friday:
Sunrise
: 71,000
Today: 43,000
News Breakfast: 43,000 (ABC) / 20,000 (ABC News)

Nationally:

Friday
Sunrise: 298,000
Today: 248,000
News Breakfast: 131,000 (ABC) / 68,000 (ABC News)

Today averaged 236,000 last week but is underperforming in Melbourne. Its strongest market is currently in Brisbane.

  1. I’m from Perth and the only reason I watch any show other than News Breakfast is because today has Perth local news. Sunrise news is pitiful and is 3 mins before heading back to Sydney.

  2. Great to hear. I stopped watching Today over two years ago. Was sick and tired of them just promoting shows like The Voice. Prefer ABC Breakfast that actually cover news, festivals etc.

  3. I often have ABC News on 2nd screen…I do not get to watch Breakfast on a regular basis….but if watching mornings…it is the only one for me….

  4. This is great to see, I think the team on ABC breakfast do an amazing job. More focused on the news of the day, and less headline attention. In a sidenote, during the PM knifing during the week, it was great to see ABC was switching between its studios across the country and offering their talent the chance to be seen throughout the day. They did an amazing job.

  5. I click over every now and again to have a look at what Today is doing before I go to work but it just seems boring and definitely no chemistry between the hosts that I can see. Should have kept Deb Knight to liven it up and have a bit of fun. She doesn’t get enough credit for her talents.

  6. An excellent win for ABC Breakfast, long may they contiune to provide an alternative! An increased % would certaintly help them. Only sd ting for me, is I have to wait until 6am to watch in winter, yet 24 provides it at 5:30 in Qld due to daylight savings! 🙂

    1. Had to be up earlier than usual this morning and turned on only to discover that News Breakfast doesn’t start till 6am. I wondered if the headstart on the other channels causes inertia in viewers.
