Vale: Charlotte Rae

US character actress best known for The Facts of Life, has died.

US character actress Charlotte Rae, best known for The Facts of Life, has died aged 92.

She died at her Los Angeles home on Sunday according to representatives. Rae revealed last year that she had bone and pancreatic cancer, but a cause of death was not immediately revealed.

Her death comes as the sitcom is in the news for a potential comedy reboot.

Rae played housekeeper Edna Garrett on the Diff’rent Strokes, and when her character proved popular, she proposed a spin-off that became The Facts of Life.

The sitcom about a girls’ boarding school saw her play house mother guiding teens through issues ranging from dating to alcohol. She finally left the show in 1986 for health reasons, replaced by Cloris Leachman.

Her other credits included Car 54 Where Are You?, ER, Pretty Little Liars, Sisters, 101 Dalmations: The Series and The King of Queens. Film credits included Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Tom and Jerry: The Movie and there were Tony nominations for her roles in Pickwick, Morning Noon and Night amongst her many stage roles.

In 2011, The Facts of Life cast reunited and again in 2014.

Last year she said,“At 91, every day is a birthday. [In my book] I want to tell everybody to celebrate every day, to savor the day and be good to yourself, love yourself, and then you can be good to others and be of service to others.”
