Sam Newman meeting with Nine execs

Talks on Newman's future at Nine locked down for the day after Melbourne Upfronts.

Sam Newman will meet with Nine execs on Thursday, to clarify his future with the network.

The meeting, locked down for a day after Sydney execs fly in for their Melbourne Upfronts presentation, comes after his on air ‘resignation’ and a belated press release announcement for The Footy Show in 2019. Industry chatter suggests Nine will still have an AFL show next year but the form and talent are still under discussion.

Friend Shane Warne is also touting a show for the pair to front together.

“Sam Newman is Channel 9,” Warne told the Herald Sun. “He should have his own show.

“There is an amazing opportunity for anyone who comes up with the right nightly show.

“If (Coldplay frontman) Chris Martin comes to Australia and wants to promote his new album, what show does he go on?

“So maybe Sam and I have got something in the pipeline for a show.”

“What will be, will be,’’ Newman said.

“They have summonsed me. They run their network and company how they want.

“Other producers are interested in what I’m doing. But I’m speaking to my network first.”

Warne’s last Nine show Warnie was axed in 2011 after just 5 episodes and dismal reviews.  It was the last variety show to be recorded at GTV9’s Richmond studio.

  1. “Warne’s last Nine show Warnie was axed in 2011 after just 5 episodes and dismal reviews. It was the last variety show to be recorded at GTV9’s Richmond studio.”

That is by far the most depressing thing I’ve ever read on this website

  2. Why not have Sam Newman, Shane Warne and maybe someone from Sydney like Paul Vaultin host a sport show so then viewers from around Australia will have some interest. It could be similar to the new Sports Tonight which im really liking.

  3. “Sam Newman is Channel 9” – yeah, don’t think so, Shane.
There would be a significant portion of the population north of the Murray River who wouldn’t have the faintest idea who he is.
