Auditions: Pointless

10 issues a new casting call for NSW-based contestants.

Pointless looks like going back before the cameras with a new casting call for NSW-based contestants.

“Is your head full of obscure knowledge and niche facts; is everything you know absolutely Pointless?” a casting notice asks.

“Then we want you! We are looking for teams of two to compete. If you and your team-mate are Australian residents, over the age of 18 and have a great range of general knowledge, then this is the show for you.”

Ratings for the show have not been strong and 10 has indicated it needs to attract more older viewers to its offering. Let’s not stop there, it needs to attract any viewers it can get, regardless of age. Word of mouth is what the show needs. Or a new timeslot.

You can apply here.

  1. Agree Hayley7 – I too was a bit sceptical at the beginning, but feel the show has settled in really well and am enjoying it immensely. There is good chemistry between Mark and The Doc, the shorter format and less detail about the contestants (unlike the UK version) makes for good viewing. I really hope TEN perseveres with it as it does challenge the brain and certainly beats the s**t out of mind-numbingly banal shows like The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!, and that new pile of trash, Bride & Prejudice, each of which is an insult to the intelligence. Pitching it against the news on other channels is a mistake. Change the time TEN slot to give it the chance it richly deserves.

  2. I think its pretty obvious to everyone ( except 10’s programming department ) that Pointless is just that.
As i said when it was launched, it is not a 10 show and never will be. 200,000 viewers nationally is a shocking figure and needs to be addressed ASAP… or 10’s programming department is just … Pointless.

  3. Are they going to make a ‘ pointess ‘ movie. Why do you have to set everything up with auditions. Just get everyone to send in a “Pick me” form. Draw the next weeks contestants out of a barrel, and see what beautiful normal people you get. It could be a real laugh. Its only a quiz show. We never have auditions to see who can play Monopoly at our place.

        1. I would like to see a strong Ten also, unfortunaely Seven and Nine News are on at the same time, and they have big numbers because of the time, Ten is trying to be different with an earlier news show. Both Seven and Nine have loyal news audiences which stay on after the news because some are a bit lazy to change to something a little different. You only have to look at the numbers for Neighbours when it went to Eleven or now Peach. as a lot of people do not watch anything other than the main channels. Again I say that there are not enough boxes with ratings as the ratio is awfully small with a country of over 24 million people, to determine accurate numbers, and maybe they should include all states. Not just the mainland states.

  4. I find Pointless unbearable to watch. We don’t need a to know every finer detail of each answer. Forced laughter is a turn off. Please stop saying “good luck at home”. Stop yellow and shouting the answers, we can see them. Apart from that it should be gone from our screens. I did see a call for contestants about 3 weeks ago so this is old news.

    1. I like the detail for each answer, I like the “Good Luck at home” . I find the other quiz shows unbearable to watch this is why I like Pointless. Every one to their own taste and for years Ten has been a little different, which is great to see. I am looking forward to no cricket on Ten or Nine. Maybe I just like the things which are out of the normal, and I like what the masses do not like.

    2. Those things you complain of are inherited from the British version (although given its poor ratings of late, perhaps audiences there are getting sick of them, too).

  5. Move it to 5:00 or 5:30. Ten News at 6:00pm. The Project at 7:00pm and it runs for half an hour. Prime time from 7:30. Ratings will surely increase. Ten can thank me later ?

    1. Only thing I can see it would be competing against the UK version. There could be a clause in the agreement which precludes the broadcast of the same show at the same time. I don’t know but it could be a possibility.

  6. Interesting how Ten tolerate lower ratings numbers for shows to survive. If Seven or Nine had numbers this low for any show in peak time viewing it would have been axed a long time ago

  7. I like Mark but he is trying to inject too much comedy into it. Hard Quiz gets away with it, but Pointless needs more restraint from the host. I like the banter between the two hosts but Mark please tone down the intros and over the top delivery and it will be so much better.

    1. One thing I don’t like is the over the top hand movements on the jackpot amount. Mind you I couldn’t do it, so I wonder how any of the writer’s who contributed to the blog, could do better. Ten have the problem with their, news at being early, mind you I enjoy it, but maybe as someone else has said, start the news later and only run it for half an hour. ABC have been doing it for years, and then maybe have a local news like Win do in Tasmania, even if it is from NSW.

  8. Much better than Family Feud in my opinion. I like the banter between Mark and the Doc. I like the fact that they post the answers on Tenplay, could be a bit easier to find though, In Tasmania we only get it on 10 Peach at 6.00 pm. I dont know about getting a new timeslot, I see thatr the figurs are going up and down a lot depending on the nights opf the week.. I like the hosts, I like the length of the show, and I enjoy finding the answers. I hope TEN stick with the show, maybe a good one to repeat after Have You Been paying Attention !

  9. Bring back Family Feud and then watch the ratings increse but dont over work the show this time, keep the show to 5 nights a week like classic Feud was and maybe do the odd Saturday night Celebrity specials.

  10. The cash amount they play for is embarrassingly low. And then it jackpots to $200. Omg seriously. If cash can’t be improved have holidays or something as a prize.

          1. Hard Quiz gives away nothing…Millionaire and The Chase give away nothing most nights too…I would say Pointless gives away the most cash regularly…

  11. I was a big fan of the British version and initially skeptical of our reboot and the many changes (hosts, shorter time, fewer rounds, fewer category options for the jackpot etc) but I think it’s really settled into itself. Mark and Andrew are really superb in this. It’s a favourite of my parents, who had never seen the British version. Actually, they were visiting me on Melbourne Cup day and found the British version on ABC. They said it was so boring and the hosts seemed to have no chemistry! So I think for Aussie audiences, the Ten reboot is getting it right. Especially now that they’re posting all the answers to the open-ended questions on TenPlay. I’m really glad Ten is sticking with it.

    1. No you are not alone Hayley7. I have commented a few times on here that I really like Aussie Pointless. The funny banter between Mark and the Doc really makes it for me. Happy they are sticking with it.

      1. Yeah, I think the Doc does a really fab job no doubt… but I reckon Mark is really shining as a host… it’s a pity he’s not more appreciated… even when they have to fill time with stories from the contestants, he manages to make it funny.
I love when he talks about how the losing contestants will be ‘eliminated’… or ‘assassinated’… or ‘launched into the sun’ lol

    2. I think it’s very good. Enjoy watching. The hosts are very good. Great banter. Mark is an amazing talent and he is going to be a huge success on our screens for many years to come.
Channel 10 has the best talent on tv.
