Even US viewers think there is too much Reality TV

But just like Australia, they still continue to watch it.

American viewers hold a view echoed often in Australia, that according to a recent survey, there is too much Reality TV on air.

But just like Australia, they still continue to watch it.

A Hollywood Reporter genre survey of 2,200 respondents found that while Comedy, Action / Adventure, Thrillers / Mystery, Dramas and Documentary were assessed favourably, Reality was viewed negatively.

And in America they don’t even have stripped Reality shows hogging the primetime schedule.

61 percent wished there were fewer unscripted shows. No other type of show came close, with Horror (29 percent say too much) garnering less than half the negative response.

America’s Got Talent, The Voice and Shark Tank were the most-loved unscripted shows but The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, among the least-loved along with Keeping Up With the Kardashians and the Real Housewives.

Asked which shows they would appear on given the chance, respondents mentioned Pawn Stars most often.

  1. I suppose the answer is that these shows are addictive. So many people start off intending to hate a new show, then get pulled in. And many of these are just glorified competitions, more complex/complicated forms of quiz shows – people apply, perform tasks in an attempt to win over the other contestants, finally there is one winner. Only the “fly on the wall” shows are really “reality”, and then they are more logically defined as documentaries.

  2. “Asked which shows they would appear on given the chance, respondents mentioned Pawn Stars most often” – No doubt responses by Americans who confuse ‘pawn’ and ‘porn’ all day.

  3. In my days it was about movies remember “Sunday Night At The Movies” when FTA use to put on 3 blockbuster movies on at the same time but with Netflix,Stan,Foxtel that will never happen again!
