Returning: Insight

Jenny Brockie returns to discuss pill testing and dealing with recreational drug use.

Insight returns to SBS next week with host Jenny Brockie to discuss pill testing and dealing with recreational drug use.

In 2016, 1 in 8 Australians reported using an illegal substance in the past 12 months, with the most popular being cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy*.

Five drug-related deaths at festivals this summer – and numerous suspected overdoses – have sparked a coronial inquest and renewed debate about how best to minimise the risks associated with recreational drug-use.

Insight, Australia’s leading forum for debate and first person stories, will go beyond the headlines in its first episode of 2019 to talk to young people about why and how they take drugs – and if anything would alter their decisions.

Award winning journalist and Insight host Jenny Brockie will ask – how do young people currently weigh up the risks of using drugs? What kinds of conversations have influenced their attitude to drug-taking? How do they learn about managing their reactions to specific drugs; and how they might personally react to a substance?

Much media attention has focused on the possibilities of pill testing. Insight will examine how it actually works, and what’s proven about its ability to reduce harm and risky behaviour. Are there any limitations to be considered?

The program will also broaden out the discussion to look at other methods of harm minimisation. Are there viable alternatives to something like pill testing and how effective have they been?

Tuesday 19 February at 8.30pm on SBS.
