Vale: Tony Featherstone

Announcer Tony Featherstone, once known as the Voice of ABC, has died aged 72.

He recently suffered a stroke but passed away peacefully this week in Sydney.

Featherstone was responsible for voicing ABC promos until 2011. His work included voicing end program voice overs, viewer advice notices and other bits and pieces including an occasional voice on Media Watch.

He had a long and varied career, most notable was his long running stint at 2CH from the late 70s to early 90s.

He was amongst other things a radio producer for Graham Kennedy at 3LO when Kennedy was taken off TV for the infamous ‘crow call.’

He also presented the radio version of Hit Scene for ABC radio and also worked as a topical reporter for ABC program Scene 74 in Melbourne.

He was also the Australian face at the end of Hour Of Power each week on Channel TEN, wearing a tweed jacket reading out the local Australian address details.  He also did some voice over work on The Chaser.

When he finished in 2011, Featherstone was the last in a long line of fulltime announcers that stretched back to the first day of ABC TV in 1956.
