AFL, Cricket battle it out on Thursday.

Ratings: MasterChef best in entertainment shows as Top 10 contestants are chosen.

With AFL on Seven and Cricket on 9GEM, sport fans were divided last night.

Thursday Night AFL pulled 451,000 for Seven /7mate, but that was down on last Thursday’s game of 622,000. No doubt some viewers were drawn to the ICC Cricket World Cup on 9GEM, 348,000 was a bumper number for multichannels. Might it have climbed higher still on the main channel?

But MasterChef Australia was best in entertainment shows at 652,000 for 10 and topped the demos. That saw Sandeep Pandit leave the contest as the show settled on its Top 10 for 2019.

Seven network won Thursday with 33.1% then Nine 29.1%, 10 17.9%, ABC 12.9% and SBS 6.8%.

Seven News was #1 with 1.03m / 986,000 for Seven then The Chase (598,000 / 419,000), Home and Away (563,000), . Britain’s Got Talent was 189,000 in 3 cities.

  1. How is late night Wentworth fairing on ABC these days?

Straight from Season 4 last week into Season 5 last night, glad they are persevering with the full series.

    1. 9GEM HD started yesterday in Sydney and Melbourne on LCN95. Other cities were a day earlier. Zero promotion of it though from what I’ve seen, not even an HD watermark on 95 last night. So now Nine has 2 HD channels. I actually thought last night that 9GEM would beat Nine until I saw yet another rain delay in the cricket.

There are rumours around that 95 ultimately will become a full time HD sports channel later in the year, which would leave 9GEM just SD and able to continue with regular programming while cricket and the like is on.

      1. Can’t see Nine having a 24/7 sports channel, they simply don’t have enough sports to warrant it. Ten tried that with One when it launched and it didn’t do well.

As for Dave’s question if the ratings would be higher if it was on the main channel, I doubt it. Given Australian games aren’t the same day each week, Nine don’t want to interrupt their regular programming for each game. And everyone can now receive multichannels unlike the pre analogue switch off days.

        1. They certainly can make it a Sports Channel. 9Sport? Anyways, they have Tennis Open, NRL, Cricket, Netball and more. It all depends, it would be hard for them to convert the main channel sports into the multichannel. This will definitely bring their ratings up.

      2. Yeah I got confused last night as I had them as 91, 92, 93, 94 (with others hidden) and as I surfed through the TV said 93 doesn’t exist any more, so I did a retune and it popped up again. So as I went through to hide Channels again it had 9HD Melbourne, looked again and they all had Melbourne after then (as did Seven’s). So I took a closer look and discovered 95GEM HD Melbourne written there, so guess that sorts it all out now for the Ashes and NRL clashes and guessing in all states 95GEM HD will be used for the Ashes keeping 9HD free for regular programming (when the World Cup has been on the NRL is on 9GO in Melbourne).
