High school science teacher Troy Eggleston has won the Mastermind grand final on SBS.

His specialist subject was Melbourne Cup winners.

He beat out experts on Boardwalk Empire, the Origins of WWI and Al Capone. All 4 men were also tested on general knowledge by host Jennifer Byrne.

Eggleston wins an etched bowl trophy, handcrafted by Indigenous artist Dennis Golding and all-important bragging rights.

“This is my first ever quiz show and I absolutely loved it,” he said.

“I’m one of the most competitive people you ever want to meet.”

He added, “For me winning is a bonus after the journey of trying to win.”

SBS is yet to announce a second season of the quiz produced by BBC Australia.

      1. True. Networks are such cheapskates, but this show shouldn’t be compared in any way with “Hard Quiz”, which I must say I really enjoy; they are not of the same calibre, just as the SBS version was not a patch on the BBC original which has been running since 1972. Replacing Jennifer Byrne while incapacitated with Marc Fennell was the nail in the coffin (no offense here Marc, we love “The Feed” in this household and never miss an episode – even with Jan Fran gone!), but it’s like replacing Tony Jones on “Q&A” with Rove McManus.

  1. SBS did this show no favours, yanking it for 5 weeks mid-way through its run. However, I’m hopeful it’ll get another run. I’ve found it quite enjoyable.
