Are promos getting it right?

Reality juggernauts are going all out in their promos for 2020.

We’re seeing some lavish promos for early 2020 shows that are certainly going all out.

10’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! dropped on Melbourne Cup Day, with Julia Morris & Chris Brown kidnapped by Miguel Maestre… filmed at Carriageworks it involved stunt doubles and a reveal of Miguel as first celeb into the jungle. I thought it was good fun.

My Kitchen Rules dropped their first promo earlier this month (it had screened to advertisers earlier a Upfronts). It also takes a comedic approach.

But MKR has since dropped another one which shows Manu & Colin giving a sport-style motivation speech to 2020 contestants. To me this is all wrong. Aside from some terrible acting, all it does is highlight spitefulness and bitterness. Where the hell is the cooking? The more I learn of this revamp the more I fear it has jumped the shark.

And then there is Married at First Sight, which goes from ghost story to ummmm….. Superman via a tunnel of love (ahem). Could be totes inappropes to screen during Carols by Candlelight.

In my experience, promos are usually the domain of the broadcaster, not the production companies. Half the job is to create awareness (so in theory even a bad promo can do that). The other half is a call to action to get you to tune in.

Which ones appeal to you?

  1. I really like the 007 themed promo for I’m a Celebrity. But I won’t b watching it.
I agree with the earlier comment that promos are played way too early and then way too often. For one recent reality show on Ten, promos were run at every single ad break all night!
Thank God I have a functioning mute button!

  2. Ooh, the MAFS one is beautiful. Love the wind work with the redhead! A nice change to have a poetic promo – as we all know the show won’t be either beautiful or poetic!

Love the Miguel Celeb promo; and also the smashing new Survivor All Stars one by 10.

The MKR one was better than usual; still won’t watch it.

  3. All I know is even if it’s a show I want to watch & am looking forward to by the time it finally airs I’m usually sick to death of the promos. They start them way too early. You see a promo for a new show & it gets your attention & you think this looks like a good show when’s it airing? And for months it shows with coming soon. All I want is a date. Ch 9 showed a promo a few months ago for a new US drama, can’t remember what it was called, with the woman from the Mentalist then nothing. Are we ever going to get it? It looked really good.

  4. Are promos getting it right?

    Channel 10 – Yes. Fun & engaging
Channel 9 – Kinda…sorta. Weird superman ending though
Channel 7 – No. Weak concept & sloppy acting.
I’m currently building a Delorean to go back in time…just before I watched your MKR promo.

Might have to wait till after peak hour to get up to 88 mph though

  5. Have yet to see the MAFS promo. I think the Celebrity promo is very clever but still wont make me watch the show. MKR seenn to have short memories. They protest that the show is all about the food. David you are so right about this.
They even have one of the ‘characters’ saying ‘game on moll’. Do they really think this will attract viewers?
What a shame for Matt & Gary that they are attaching MKR to Plate of Origin. Lets hope thisccwill be about the food

  6. I’ll admit I don’t watch any of these programs however I thought the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Outta Here promo was clever in its execution and who doesn’t love Miguel. I thought the MAFS promo was a little cheesy yet it hits its target audience with high production values. MKR promo is awful and does nothing to promote the tired brand especially with poor acting. MAFS was clever in that they allow the visuals and music to tell the story. Just my thoughts.

  7. I don’t think they should be allowed to air the previews until 1 month before the start date- don’t think I can stand watching 2.5 months of these promos.

  8. I’m A Celebrity’s promo is fun and action packed as is the second MKR promo. Married At First Sight’s promo is just dreadful, what a load of trash and garbage that show is. Never should MAFS be allowed to air at 7pm & 7.30. Three words to describe MAFS: Rotten, Trashy and Negative.

      1. We get Promo after Promo for months and months. When the show finally starts they usually start with a coming up on the show. Then Promos often show what happens in the next episode. Why bother watching the actual episode if we have already been told what’s going to happen!
Can’t these channels surprise us during episodes!!!
