Is anything on Apple TV+ must-see?

A handful of shows with mixed reviews ....is Apple TV+ worth it yet?

Apple TV+ launches in Australia today at cost of $7.99 a month, and also comes with a free 7 day trial.

It launches with a handful original shows Morning Wars, See, For All Mankind, and Dickinson and no library of licensed content.

At this point in time I can’t personally recommend you part with your money because Apple has not supplied any previews, and the reviews for key shows elsewhere have been fairly mixed.

For All Mankind and Dickinson rank around 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Morning Wars (called The Morning Show overseas) has a 59% score.

See, with Jason Moama, is at just 42%.

There are also other titles including doco The Elephant Queen, kids shorts Snoopy in Space, kids series Ghostwriter, pre-school series Helpsters,

M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Servant and Octavia Spencer in Truth Be Told will both launch before the end of the year.

Meanwhile a 10 part adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ best-selling novel Shantaram, is filming in Melbourne with Charlie Hunnam.

  1. I’m only basing this comment on the first two free episodes, but given the cast, it’s really quite baffling as to just how Morning Wars has ended up as bad as it is.

  2. If you bought a new iPhone iPad or Apple TV since September ( which is millions of people) you automatically get a free year of the service.
I’ll give it a go for For All Mankind and Dickinson.

    1. Deckard : Do you know if this applies to Apple Watch as well? I’m umming about getting one but a free year of Apple TV would do the deal for me. There’s no way I’m ready to pay for it with this current roster.

  3. David,is there a reason they have no licensed content, will they get any and all said and done will it actually help ,early days yes but i can’t see this lasting.

      1. Ah ok ,many thanks it will be very interesting next year ,I look forward to finding out the amount of streaming services households have over next year.

        1. You have to also remember, Apple isn’t really joining the streaming wars. While ATV+ will take away from market share from other streamers, their focus is adding people to the Apple Ecosystem, like Amazon has done with Prime. The Apple App already acts as a aggregator of content, and most people already paid for a steaming service, this just adds to why you should/would use the Apple TV app. It’s also give people who don’t have an apple product a reason to get an account. While 8 shows isnt much, you only really need one to get people on board. I personally know a lot of people who got Prime Video just to watch Fleabag or The Boys, but a lot of them kept the service to see shows like Sneaky Pete and The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
If you break it down, the 8 shows apple choice to launch with were kinda smart a smart choice. Dickison was made with the YA audience in mind, Helpster &…

          1. @mastergreen ,that’s a good reply and makes alot of sense ,agree with Amazon Prime I had that for a while to watch all but a few shows ,no longer really use it.

  4. AppleTV+ is not concerned about budgets, I’m sure I read that The Morning Show received $300 million to make, or $15 million an episode, someone must be doing okay using Apple’s blank cheque system. Hollywood elitism is not anywhere near death it seems.

  5. I’m surprised that Apple is starting their streaming service with such little content-only 8 shows as far as I can see.I think they will struggle, especially when there are so many other options out there right now.Apparently Disney+ is going to start out with at least 500 movie titles, which gives them a big advantage over Apple+.

    1. Yes. But 500 movies that people have already seen. It’s a nice little catalogue service, just like your local public library. Great if you have kids though, I guess. They don’t seem to care if they’ve already seen something.

What actually gets people is original content, like The Mandalorian.

  6. Well Netflix,Stan and Disney Plus must be quaking in their boots ,this isn’t the streaming service you’ve been looking for ,move along ,move along.

  7. Certainly not worth it for the lack of content at that price point. I do love that they changed the name of The Morning Show for Australian audiences to avoid confusion with Larry & Kylie’s Morning Show on Seven though!

  8. I don’t see how all these streamers can survive in the Oz market. Nothing on ATV makes me want to pay for it, Amazon might scrape through with its Prime retail service bundle, then it’ll be Disney v Netflix – not sure how Stan can compete, nor any others hoping to enter. Is HBO Max coming here too? What will that do to Foxtel?

      1. Depends if they start lose the big titles like The Office. I mean I’ll probably consider ditching Stan if they lose The Office and buy the boxset when JB has a 20% off sale.

  9. Will this be available on the Roku device I have for my Foxtel streaming David? I have all the other streamers on there… I’m finding it difficult to get information on what devices AppleTV+ will be available

  10. I was looking forward to The Morning Show, For All Mankind and Dickinson. Looks like I might not be watching The Morning Show… I’m not surprised ATV+ is bombing. Just because you lock a big name into an expensive contract doesn’t mean everything they touch is going to be instant gold.

    1. I just finished watching the first three episodes of The Morning Show and thought it was pretty good.
It really doesn’t come together until the second episode but the performances are strong all round. It has more of an ensemble feel than the trailers would have you believe. Mark Duplass and Billy Crudup are the standouts of the supporting cast at the moment.
It’s not costing me anything for a year so I’m on board to see what appears on the service.
I’m still looking forward to Disney Plus though.
