Q&A: Mar 30

Monday's Q&A will look at the cost of Coronavirus.

Monday’s Q&A will look at the cost of Coronavirus.

With bans on travel and public gatherings now in place, thousands of Australian businesses, jobs and livelihoods have evaporated overnight. The daily heartbreaking queues outside Centrelink tell the story- we are facing a devastating and widespread economic downturn, not seen for generations.

Millions are expected to be plunged into unemployment as a result of the looming recession, so how will we cope? Are the government’s stimulus packages enough? Should laid off workers receive better wage support, and should there be a mortgage and rent freeze? What glimmers of hope exist in the fast-changing economic landscape?

  1. To any young Australians that watched QandA tonight- Do not listen to these dreadful comments about this country’s financial woes- old MS Deloitte wont say it but there is an answer and it is time to turn around the injustice that has been robbing Australians for many years now – Trillions of $dollars leave our shores every year in minerals and gems and we have been getting next to nothing for it- not any more- our future generations will be rich not in debt if we start charging 50% royalty on our resources like the Norwegians do – Look up the ‘Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund’ they only have oil and gas we have that plus every mineral and gem the world knows- time to get our sovereign share.

  2. I shudder to think what the final economic costs will be, as well as lives lost and altered forever.
Each day I hear countless statistics and stories that continue to shock me.
Yesterday I had a call from my Mum in Melbourne to tell me Dad, who turns 80 in June has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. I didn’t think it was possible for me to feel any more overwhelmed ?

  3. Montaigne’s insights will be interesting. She would have done well at Eurovision as I do like her music. Maybe Hamish may ask Montaigne to close the show.
