SBS defends The Feed sketch

“Satire is a significant element of The Feed’s format," says SBS.

SBS has defended a sketch on The Feed which has attracted headlines for including a swastika.

In the Quarantine Haircuts Gone Wrong sketch, Jenna Owen and Vic Zerbst were given buzz cuts by Alex Lee, with Zerbst’s skinhead  revealing a distinctive birthmark in the shape of the swastika.

On Twitter the sketch drew very little reaction, but news.com.au has noted Facebook criticism and raised concerns around poor taste and neo-Nazi groups using the image.

A spokesperson for SBS said, “The Feed is made by young creatives who explore a range of issues and share perspectives on matters that resonate with their audience.

“Satire is a significant element of The Feed’s format. In the words of the team behind the piece: ‘Our sketch, co-written by a young Jewish comedian, is not in any way an endorsement of anti-Semitism, Nazism or hatred. Humour is powerful and reclaiming symbols of hatred is a way to fight against oppression. We hope this sketch is viewed with that understanding.’”

  1. Its easy to see why people would be outraged from the news.com.au article but after watching the clip, it was so clearly over the top. The humour is not in the symbol but the situation. Once again, we’re not allowed to have a laugh without someone being offended or outraged.
