“We are very happy people”: Patti dismisses ‘breakdown’ article

The bullying of showbiz veterans continues....

Patti Newton has responded to the latest tabloid misreporting, after Woman’s Day suggested she had a “public breakdown.”

The veteran showbiz star told The Morning Show she was out walking with her grandkids when one fell over, but a paparazzo was snapping nearby.

“I even saw the bloke taking those photos and I waved to him and smiled, but I will not do that next time,” she declared.

The article also suggested Bert was in ailing health.

Bert and Patti are sadly frequent fodder for Bauer Media-owned magazines, which arguably owes a debt to Bert for his long association with Logie Awards. But the bullying of veterans continues….

“The poor people that read those magazines and believe them are thinking Bert is on his deathbed and I am having a breakdown but it’s not true,” she said.

“We are very happy people and I would hate to think people believe those things.”

Patti will soon feature in The Fully Monty: Guys & Gals on Seven.

  1. Agreed with the above comments regarding this type of story. Being part of the history of Australian television doesn’t give the media a ticket to make stuff up. Some respect would be nice.
Thanks for publishing the right of reply and your opinion David

  2. I have noticed for many years now the negative stories about Patti and Bert Newton. These two legends do not deserve the false stories these magazines make up about them every few months. We are supposed to respect out elders not cause them grief.

  3. I honestly believe this type of journalism should be legislated against. Bert and Patti deserve a lot more respect than this, as do other celebrities who are targeted by these magazines.

  4. I wish the media would ‘back off’ from these celebrities and give them some privacy! It’s really disgraceful giving publicity to celebrities who clearly haven’t asked for it

    1. I see what you did there. Yes their careers have benefited from publicity, but surely even you would agree that totally fabricated lies should not be printed ?

  5. Serious question David…do you feel that you have to report on articles like this? I feel that these magazines need to be completely ignored to send them out of business.

    1. It’s a fair question and there are definitely times I feel like I am feeding a beast if I rework a story. I don’t have a simple answer, so each case would be different. This one involved a right of reply, but I have felt for some time this kind of magazine treatment of seniors is particularly reprehensible.

  6. I fear for the future of our species if there is anyone anywhere who actually believes anything written in these magazines. Enough people must still be buying them…

  7. No wonder people hate and don’t trust the media. I just hope this wasn’t the same low-life paparazzo responsible for that shameful display with Brian May back in February – it seems to be in the same “News Of The World” league.
