On Monday’s Four Corners, “The truth about 5G” reported by Sean Nicholls investigates supposed claims about the hazards of 5G.

Around Australia a vocal band of activists have joined a worldwide protest movement against the arrival of the next generation in wireless technology known as 5G.

Activists claim 5G is an invisible and potentially deadly health hazard, blaming the radiation emitted by the technology for a range of long-term health problems. They are demanding an immediate end to the current rollout of 5G across the country and have taken to the streets to protest even amidst the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic

“We are going to be in a radiation soup that we cannot opt out of. At the moment we have choices. Once 5G is implemented, we no longer have any choice.” Activist leader

On Monday Four Corners investigates these claims, exploring how the technology works and examining the scientific studies undertaken into whether the technology is actually a threat to our health.

“There are just thousands and thousands of papers out there that have gone into everything from epidemiology of cancer to simple, does it make you feel bad, agitated, cause you symptoms of any form?” Professor

Supporters of 5G reject the claims made by protestors, saying the technology will completely transform our lives by unlocking ‘game changing’ ideas.

“5G’s not just about phone calls and ever-increasing resolution of videos, it’s going to unlock the Internet of Things. And this is where machines start talking to machines. And this is going to allow a whole revolution in the way we live and organise ourselves.” Professor of engineering

Fears about 5G have prompted astonishing scenes around the world with telecommunication towers set on fire in multiple countries, including Australia. The program investigates the rise of the anti-5G movement and the spread of wild conspiracy theories tying the COVID-19 pandemic to the 5G rollout. Piecing together the viral spread of these theories, the program uncovers a sophisticated misinformation campaign.

“It creates division. It creates disruptions. It creates protests. It creates possibly more people disobeying any lockdown orders, any social distancing orders. And of course, that then further damages the economy, damages the population in the first place by spreading the virus further.” Digital media researcher

Security experts say the real and present danger around 5G is not the health concerns, but the deepening technological Cold War between the US and China, in which the contest for 5G supremacy is escalating.

“China is eating America’s lunch. It is losing technological advantage; it is losing markets. It is losing also influence.” National security researcher

  1. The worst thing about any of this tech is its ability to acquire so much information about you. 5G is only going to provide the biggest players with even more, hence they support it. I will leave the debate about physical and mental health impacts to others as I know very little about them

  2. I was unimpressed by ABC’s promo, I felt like it was giving some level of credence to these nutcases. I can only hope that they completely dismantle some of these mouth-breathers during their investigation. Anti-science sentiment is the real threat in modern society. Read a book, you jabronis.

  3. People oppose Cell stations hundreds of metres away but are quite happy sitting all day next to powerful 802.11ac router that delivers their Netflix. At the moment 5G is marginally faster than the lastest 4G, but shorter range and with less penetration through obstacles.
