Is Big Sky the next big hope for US broadcast TV?

David E. Kelley’s new thriller was viewed 25.5 million times after its release.

American network television doesn’t often get buzz for new dramas in the same way as cable or streaming anymore but Big Sky may be ABC’s best shot in a while.

David E. Kelley’s new thriller was viewed 25.5 million times across social media platforms three days after its release. Twitter was around half of those views.

For comparison, the top 3 most-watched broadcast trailers at the 2019 Upfronts, were Stumptown, Emergence and Mixed-ish, between 14.6 million and 16.1 million views across social media platforms in their first week.

Based on the book series by C.J. Box, Big Sky follows the investigation into the kidnapping of two sisters on a remote highway in Montana. The cast includes Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury, Ryan Phillippe and John Carroll Lynch.

It’s not clear who will have broadcast rights in Australia but it could go to a possible Disney-owned Star streaming, which is expected to have ABC, FX, Freeform, Searchlight, and 20th Century Studios content.

Big Sky was also an Australian drama series produced by John Edwards that ran for two seasons on 10 from 1997 to 1999.

  1. I watched the Trailer provided here and liked, but with no streaming service or pay TV subscription I will lose interest if it is not on free to air TV. But then most of the popular culture shows of the last 20 years I’ve missed, as I only watch what I like and can access. I am still enjoying Westside season 4 and 5 on DVD 🙂

  2. I saw the teaser in the Emmys credits and thought it looked pretty cool. I’m looking forward to this one. Hopefully it doesn’t end up being another Disney-ABC show that gets shafted in Australia. Maybe the buzz around it will push an Aussie broadcaster or service to pick it up if Disney are happy to let it go before their Star service?
