US issues new guidelines for intimacy scenes

SAG-AFTRA will also release a mobile app to report sexual harassment in the workplace.

US performer unions SAG-AFTRA are stepping up guidelines for preventing sexual harassment in the workplace.

New resources have been developed for members, including the guide “Sex, Nudity & You,” a rundown of some of the protections now afforded to performers shooting nude, semi-nude, simulated sex and intimate scenes; the “Quick Guide for Scenes Involving Nudity and Simulated Sex”; and a pledge to work with top intimacy coordinators on standards for training and certification, building on the release earlier this year of its “Standards & Protocols for the Use of Intimacy Coordinators.”

Significantly, they even announced a mobile app which will become available later this year to aid in reporting sexual harassment and identifying abusers, but no detail on how this functions.

“Unfortunately, there is still much to do and sexual harassment remains an all-too-common occurrence,” SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and National Executive Director David White said in their statement.

“To help members who have experienced or witnessed sexual harassment in the workplace, SAG-AFTRA has developed a mobile app reporting tool that will allow them to easily report these incidents and receive referrals for therapeutic, legal and law enforcement assistance. The app will also collect data to identify serial abusers. The beta version will be in limited testing with members later this month, and a full release to the membership is expected later this year.”

In August 2018 Screen Producers Australia & Live Performance Australia released industry codes to prevent workplace discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment and bullying, following industry consultation.

Reports on disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein emerged three years ago.

  1. Being an intimacy coordinator would be an interesting job, what qualifications do you need?.
I believe that a lot of contractual small print does apply for doing nude scenes or any of the various types of intimate scenes, which can be quite explicit, scenes which some actors do feature in more commonly than others.
I’m sure no one was twisting their arms.
