Renewed: The Hot Zone

National Geographic limited series shifts to anthology for a story on the mailing of anthrax in 2001.

National Geographic has renewed its drama The Hot Zone.

Originally a limited series it will now shift to anthology and chronicle a different biological threat: the mailing of anthrax in 2001, not long after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The first season chronicled the origins of the Ebola virus, and featured Julianna Margulies, Noah Emmerich and Topher Grace.

After drawing the best ever ratings for a Nat Geo scripted series producers Touchstone TV and Scott Free began discussing a second instalment.

“The gripping, propulsive story of the hunt for the anthrax killer who terrorised the country in the dark days that followed the Sept. 11 attack couldn’t be more timely,” said Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president of global scripted content and documentary films at Nat Geo. “As the world battles COVID-19, another deadly and mysterious virus, The Hot Zone: Anthrax is a scientific thriller for our time.”

Dates have not been announced.

  1. The original limited series will be hard to better, but I suspect that this shows attraction was its timing, being released so close to a real global pandemic event.
