While Sydney is coming to terms with a disrupted Christmas and singing is off the agenda, Carols in the Domain will still broadcast this week.
The event was filmed on Friday night indoors at the Aware Super Theatre at the Sydney Convention Centre -no audience was in attendance.
Performers this year include Samantha Jade, Shannon Noll, Amber Lawrence, Hugh Sheridan, Todd McKenney, Rachael Beck, Penny McNamee, Mark Vincent, Stephen Madsen, Ashleigh Rubenach, Drummer Queens, The Wiggles, Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
The Morning Show‘s Larry Emdur & Kylie Gillies spoke to TV Tonight about the event several weeks ago when the outlook for everybody was somewhat brighter.
“Santa has been cleared. There were some issues as to whether he was going to make it or not, with quarantine. He’s been given a special exemption apparently!” said Larry.
“Everyone needs this right now, so it’s going to be good and Kylie loves to sing along.”
“I think everyone’s really embracing Christmas like never before,” Kylie agreed. “People are putting up their trees, decorating their houses earlier. I think people are just desperate to get in that Christmas spirit. Anecdotally that’s what I’m seeing. All my friends are doing far more Christmassy things earlier this year. So I think it’s there’s an appetite to be cheered up and to be embraced.”
Kylie Gillies also booked a trip to Queensland to visit parents, with her husband and two boys (last night posting on Instagram she was forced to travel alone after grabbing a late flight out).
Larry added, “I had offered to put Kylie in the back of my truck under the seat and drive her up here. If the flights weren’t cleared. That’s how devoted I am to this relationship, but now as it turns out, I have Christmas off.”
Larry Emdur will finish his year on The Morning Show on Thursday and hopes to spend Christmas on Bondi Beach.
“It’s a great day once the Bondi Rescue guys get the drunk backpackers out of the rips… it’s always a highlight.”
Like all TV in 2020 The Morning Show is winding up a particularly challenging year, but another in which they won the ratings.
“We didn’t have anybody in the studio for months and months and months. That’s only just come back. We weren’t allowed to have outsiders for COVID reasons, inside the studio. So for months everything we did was via zoom,” says Kylie.
“We only had each other,” adds Larry.
“It was like Jack and Kate hanging onto that piece of flooding wood in Titanic. I kept trying to push him off but he was hanging on!” Kylie joked.
The show resumes from January 18 with Larry, Kylie and regulars including entertainment reporter Peter Ford.
“Pete’s very good at rounding that all up and giving it to us straight,” said Kylie.
“He’s fabulous. He’s very knowledgeable, he has great contacts, is always the information and can you put stuff into context? So we love Pete. We think he’s the best in the business, which is why he’s on the show and he calls it without fear or favour.”
Carols in the Domain airs 7:30pm Wednesday on Seven

Pfft, trying to trick the audience with the promos saying watch “live” and on demand.
They could’ve just broadcast last year’s Carol’s. No one would notice! 😉
Besides the 40,000 people in the crowd
This year we’re gonna party like it’s 1999
Might be partying like it’s 1999 for years to come unfortunately. Crazy times.
Fantastic to see Natarsha Belling co-host The Morning Show this morning.
Lets hope 7 can find a role for such a talented all rounder.
Great to see Tarsh. She was also on the show last week.
Agree, an easy walk up start. With so many on holidays, she makes an awesome fill in.
Got to love Larry and Kylie, this is a great interview.
