Jennifer Carpenter returns to Dexter

John Lithgow is also back as the Trinity killer.

This could be a miracle of TV nature…

US media report Jennifer Carpenter is returning to Dexter, despite he character Deb having been killed off (newsflash, spoiler) in Season 8.

That’s likely to see her revived via flashback storylines. Given the return is set 10 years after Dexter undertook his lumberjack career, hopefully there will be no discernible difference to her appearance. The series is also being referred to as a “reimagining” in some circles.

Also returning is John Lithgow who featured as the villain of Season 4.

“As all Dexter fans know, we saw the end of the Trinity Killer, so that by definition means it’s a flashback,” Lithgow told Deadline. “It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang — including Michael [C. Hall] and Jennifer Carpenter and [showrunner] Clyde Phillips.”

“I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before,” Hall said of the returning season. “And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.”

Dexter will screen in Australia on Paramount+ later this year.

  1. i loved the premise of this show & watched season 1 but found it terribly slow moving so lost interest a few eps into S2. Anyone think it would be possible to skip some eps of the rest of it & just watch specific ones to get the main story line? i know that’s not the way it usually works lol

    1. Season 2 was great, I’d say it’s definitely worth another shot, things really ramp up as the season progresses.

Season 3 was okay, definitely a drop in enjoyment but still overall good.

Season 4 was amazing though, and that is definitely thanks to John Lithgow’s performance.

  2. I am torn.

On one hand – I don’t want Showtime/CBSViacom to get my eyeballs and my money because they compromised the ending deliberately knowing full well they were going to do another season in years to come.

On the other – I do crave the feeling I got watching S1-S4.

I think I’m gonna pass. S5-S8 were trash. All the best Dexter Morgan.

  3. The final season and finale get a lot of (well-deserved) criticism, but let’s be honest, every Season after 4 was some degree of terrible. The lack of consequence of S5. The extremely obvious and incredibly lame twist of S6. The far-fetched ridiculousness of S7 that didn’t let up until the finale.

If they’re going to bring back Trinity and retcon Deb’s death, going all the way and continuing directly from Season 4 would be a fantastic direction.

  4. Is there any chance that they would go with Dexter just imagining (!) or just dreamt (!!) the death of Deb? In no other scenario would I be ok with starting a show again using that awfully lazy storytelling technique and carve out a new, satisfying conclusion if it weren’t for the horror that was that final season. I’m happy for them to rectify it. Raise the show again with a brief suspension of belief to begin with… from the ashes of that s**tstorm of a final season.
