Round the Twist set for stage musical

Brisbane to get world premiere of new musical based on a classic Kid's TV series.

A stage musical of Round the Twist is on the way with RGM Productions receiving $948,479 under the Federal Government’s RISE Covid recovery scheme.

Time Out reports RGM’s co founder Garry McQuinn (Priscilla Queen of the Desert) is producing the show written and composed by Paul Hodge with direction from Simon Phillips (Muriel’s Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Love Never Dies).

The adaptation is expected to take 26 Round the Twist episodes and distill them into roughly two hours of musical theatre.

The series, created by author Paul Jennings, debuted on Seven in 1989, before a further 3 seasons on ABC, and centered on the Twist family living in a lighthouse, who were prone to magical and comedic storylines.

Mark Mitchell, who played real estate agent Harold Gribble, once told TV Tonight, “It was revolutionary in many respects and it was designed to appeal to different age groups.

“We’d look at different themes that would appeal to the Under 7s, Under 12s, adolescents and the adults.

“It had everything in it. One of the principal characters was dead. We didn’t make a big deal about it, but it was implicit in everything. I don’t know if anyone realised!

“It had ghosts, water spirits, and it was quite animist in that respect.”

The musical will premiere in Brisbane.
