Feedback sought on Captions for Subscription TV

If you are a hearing-impaired viewer of Foxtel or Fetch TV, the govt wants your feedback.

The Federal Government is currently seeking feedback on reform proposals for captioning on Subscription Television (which includes Foxtel and Fetch, not Streaming) for hearing-impaired Australians.

Minister for Communications Paul Fletcher said, “This reform is vital, especially for the estimated one in six Australians who experience some level of hearing loss and require captioning.

“Feedback on the proposed captioning scheme for subscription television is encouraged from all interested parties, including the community, to help inform the best design for the service.

“Our focus is on providing clear and consistent rules, while also addressing the pressures being experienced by the STV industry, and this draft captioning scheme is the first step in achieving this.

“If captioning on STV impacts you or your business, then I encourage you to make a submission.”

Submissions should be provided by email to [email protected] by 11.45pm Monday 1 November, 2021.

  1. Interesting topic as I use subtitles because I watch TV late at night and keep the sound down, also some dialect is mumbled or slurred by some actors so it helps understanding what’s being said. If I were to have any suggestions I would like to see some consistency with the font types used, these fonts should have a fine black outline as standard. I find the terms (door squeaking) (trigger clicks) amusing and sometimes distracting but obviously necessary for the hearing impaired, perhaps dialogue only subtitles could be provided as an option without descriptions.
