Ad-supported Pluto TV to launch in Australia

Ad-supported streaming with channels in Movies, Entertainment, Reality, Crime, Comedy expected soon.

ViacomCBS has confirmed AVOD platform Pluto TV is set to launch in Australia.

The advertising supported streamer, currently available in North America, Europe and Latin America, offers programming through themed linear channels such as Movies, Entertainment, Reality, Crime, Comedy, Sports, Gaming and more.

Rod Prosser, chief sales officer of ViacomCBS and 10 told Tim Burrowes on his Unmade podcast, “Look, I’m probably letting the cat out of the bag a little bit here, but I’m not quite sure of the exact launch date, but one thing I can tell you is it’s coming and it won’t be too far off. We’re not talking years off. So, obviously we’ve got to get other things ready and right. But it’s certainly on its way to Australia at some point.”

The ad-based platform would not be expected to replace 10Play which is 10’s broadcast catch-up.

“I think these are the new nuances and the structure that we need to look at, what’s going to be best to serve our audiences and of course our advertising partners. So we haven’t landed that yet, still a lot of work to do, but I can’t see how they would merge, but at this point, look, we’re really enthusiastic about the 10play product. So we, as I said, we’ll continue to invest and grow that library to grow the overall minutes,” said Prosser.

As of September 2021, the service has reached 54 million monthly active users globally.

  1. I heard about Pluto recently because it’s airing Star Trek Discovery in the UK where Paramount Plus hasn’t launched yet. The Pilot TV podcast team were joking about how no one knew of it beforehand and the fact that ST:D was on a free streamer.
It’s interesting that the launches are reversed here, maybe because of 10 play and 10 all access.
