Ash smash: Nine’s 68% ratings share at AO

2.84m metro viewers watch the historic Presentation for Ash Barty at the Australian Open.

Nine has drawn record-breaking figures for the Australian Open Women’s Final.

Ash Barty’s victory over American Danielle Collins pulled a massive 2.58m metro viewers. It rose even higher for the historic Presentation at 2.84m.

Nine attracted a sensational 68.1% Free to Air share -numbers so big they are unlikely to be toppled all year.

That surpasses a 65.8% share for the 2021 primetime AFL Grand Final and a 56% share for the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony.

The good news didn’t end there.

The Men’s Doubles win by Nick Kyrgios & Thanasi Kokkinakis also drew 1.73m viewers.

For Nine it was the biggest Women’s Singles Final and Men’s Double Final in OzTAM history.

Total TV numbers will also climb higher once Regional numbers and BVOD numbers are added.

  1. Incredible. Wonder if those ratings are time corrected yet, because either one of the match or presentations is likely to go up even higher, let alone all the add ons like regional and live streaming. Should make for eye watering reading when Voz/total tv publishes final numbers.

  2. When was the last time more than 1 million Melbourne viewers watched the Australian Open? IIRC, the 2005 Aus Open Men’s Final drew 4.04 million metro viewers on Seven and brought in mammoth numbers in Melbourne.

  3. That’s a stunning result. I watched two points then rented No Time to Die on Foxtel and looked the result up online later. I can’t do tennis.

  4. Not sure that even Nine when they swooped in to grab the rights for the AO a few years back would have anticipated a local winner (and the associated mega ratings) just a few years into their broadcast tenure.

  5. Brilliant pic used here, David. Such a joyous moment; in fact I was crying when Todd announced a special guest. I figured either Rod Laver himself, or Evonne. My only quibble (well two), one of which is about the actual TV presentation, was that they didn’t invite Evonne to speak when presenting, and then Ash didn’t mention her. I get it was a shock and she was overwhelmed but she thanked everyone else, and with her hero right there, that would, for me have made it an unforgettable moment. But it was spellbinding anyway.

  6. Whoa i was predicting around 1.3 but never thought it would be that high doubt we will see those share numbers ever again

That would surely be the lowest ever primary channel shares for 7 and 10
