Peter Hitchener, Fifi Box named Moomba Monarchs.

Veteran news presenter joins a long line of Melbourne stars to don the Moomba crown.

Veteran Nine News presenter Peter Hitchener and radio presenter and Have You Been Paying Attention? regular Fifi Box have been named as Moomba Monarchs for 2022.

‘Hitch’ said, “I just love meeting Melburnians who make up our vibrant city. Being crowned a Monarch allows me to  step beyond the news desk and really connect with our greater community; I’m honoured and delighted to be a 2022 Moomba Monarch.”

Fifi Box said, “I’m absolutely honoured to be asked to be a Moomba Monarch. Moomba is such an iconic Melbourne event that I have grown up loving, so I’m incredibly proud to don the crown and enjoy the celebrations with the community.”

Lord Mayor Sally Capp added, “I am thrilled to crown Fifi and Hitchy as this year’s Moomba Monarchs. These treasured Melbourne media icons have delivered news and entertained us for years. They also add a lot of value to the community as terrific contributors, so we know they will bring plenty of fun and excitement to this year’s event.

“We are also delighted to be bringing back the Moomba Parade, Birdman Rally and Moomba Masters after a hiatus in 2021. These vibrant festival favourites are always huge crowd pleasers, and we expect they’ll attract many visitors back to the city.

“Moomba is one of the biggest events on our city’s calendar and we’re expecting almost a million people to revel in the festivities this year, providing a significant boost to our city business owners.”

Australia’s largest free community festival will return to the banks of the Yarra River from 11 to 14 March.

Nine News is one of Moomba’s major partners.

  1. Very very disappointing to hear today that GTV-9 will not be doing a broadcast, but rather crossed during Today Extra and Morning News. Pathetic. Why bother getting rights and questions now surrounding that with City of Melb. Say what you like about Seven these days, but at least HSV (VFL / Good Friday etc) have always been ‘for the city’ in my view. Reeks of Sydney HQ/Kerry Packer-ness. Please investigate and publicise this outrage, David!

  2. Channel 9 broadcast the Melbourne NYE fireworks earlier this year so presumably the Council and CH9 have a new broadcast contract. I’ll be keen to see if 7News cover this story in any way tonight

  3. I hope that Channel 7 news does not ignore the Moomba monarch story tonight as Peter Hitchener is on the other channel. In 2019, Channel 9 ignored the story probably because the Moomba monarch was the weather presenter on Ch 7 (Jane Bunn). We shall see!
