10 reviews Hillsong TV broadcasts

What is the future of Hillsong TV after Pastor Brian Houston quits?

Network 10 is reviewing its continuation of Hillsong TV following the resignation of global pastor Brian Houston.

Hillsong last week revealed that an investigation into two incidents involving Mr Houston found he had breached the church’s moral code of conduct for pastors and engaged in conduct of “serious concern”.

“We have sadly been dealing with two complaints made against Pastor Brian over the last 10 years,” the church said in a statement.

In 2013 Houston sent inappropriate text messages to a member of staff, which subsequently resulted in the staff member resigning. The church said the Pastor was under the influence of sleeping tablets at the time.

The second incident occurred in 2019, during an annual conference at Sydney Olympic Park involved the Pastor being ‘disoriented’ following medication and knocking on the door of a hotel room that was not his, entering this room and spending time with the female occupant. The Church maintained that while parts of the complaint were unable to be sustained Houston had breached the Hillsong Pastor’s Code of Conduct.

10 screens Hillsong TV early on Sunday mornings as part of its religious programming. “Discover your God-given potential with Pastor Brian Houston as he shares empowering and inspiring messages from the Word of God,” a description notes.

Pastor Brian Houston is the programme’s sole presenter and spiritual guardian, preaching to large congregations in Baulkham Hills.

Industry sources confirm 10 is now reviewing whether it will continue to screen Hillsong TV.

Since 2016 both Foxtel and Fetch TV also broadcast a Hillsong TV channel on their subscription channels, including Brian Houston TV, and via the Australian Christian Channel. “From Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia, Pastor Brian’s messages are empowering, passionate and practical for everyday life and will inspire you with the hope and purpose that can be found in a loving God,” says a description.

It isn’t clear if Hillsong pays broadcasters for airtime.

Network 10, Foxtel and Fetch TV have all been contacted for comment.

  1. I agree with Solace2021, there is plenty of scope to bring the Hillsong tv era to a close and replace it with messages from other churches. There are lots of them out them bringing hope to an ever-damaged world, the only problem is that most don’t have the means for their own production and TV time. Whatever else, that time slot is essential for Australian Christian content, and to maintain a different flavour to the other spiritual shows also shown on Sunday mornings.

So many churches are live streaming on various platforms now. It would be great to select the best to show on FTA.

  2. Hillsong and all other ministries do not pay the Australian Christian Channel to broadcast their programs. On the ACC website: “ACCTV does not charge for airtime of programs.”

It is my understanding that Hillsong does pay Channel 10 for the airtime.

  3. Oh look 10, your affiliate SCA has the perfect replacement for you. tvtonight.com.au/2017/07/religious-channel-coming-to-southern-cross-network.html
Fear not Brian, Jimmy gave his famous ‘I have sinned’ speech and rose from the dead following his ‘indiscretions’ to return as SBN/SonLife TV. Praise-a-thons and Share-a-thons accepting every form of payment. “Buy a prayer for $50”. Just waiting to hear Brian use Jim Bakker’s line, also used by Jimmy Swaggart, of how his great work was challenged by the Devil who forced him to succumb to temptation. A new movie “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” is a must see.

  4. “… ‘disoriented’ following medication and knocking on the door of a hotel room that was not his, entering this room and spending time with the female occupant.” What a lame excuse. Maybe next time try – Sorry Bill, this isn’t your room. Do you need help getting to yours? I would have thought in this day in age, the best course of action would be to own it and apologise. Religious people and organisations rely on a moral authority and making up these types of excuses doesn’t help their case.

  5. It’s about time they looked at showing a different church. Or whether they can omit Brian from the broadcasts. It will be a real shame for Christians and Hillsong, as Hillsong brought back the youth to church with good music. I’m not even Christian and I liked the Hillsong music. Where as other churches are mostly elderly with some middle aged people and a few families congregating.
