Endeavour confirms final season

Three more films starring Shaun Evans will wrap Inspector Morse prequel at 9 seasons.

UK crime drama Endeavour, a prequel to Inspector Morse, will end with its upcoming 9th season.

“After 10 phenomenally successful years, producers Mammoth Screen, and screenwriter Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam have mutually decided to bring the internationally renowned Endeavour to a close, and the series currently filming in Oxford will be the last,” an ITV statement read.

“ITV’s drama commissioning team respectfully accepts this creative decision and would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone associated with Endeavour who have made the drama such a well loved part of the UK’s drama landscape. ITV would particularly like to thank Damien Timmer, Russell Lewis, Shaun Evans and Roger Allam who have created television history following in the footsteps of Morse’s acclaimed creator, the late, great, Colin Dexter and the much missed John Thaw.”

Executive Producer Damien Timmer said, “Endeavour has been a real labour of love for all of us, and we salute Russell Lewis for his extraordinary achievement in chronicling Endeavour Morse’s coming of age across 72 hours of tv. Russell always knew where he wanted the series to end, and that Remorseful Day is nearly upon us! We’d like to thank Shaun and Roger and all the other members of the Endeavour family on and off screen, and to the show’s fans both in the U.K. and abroad. Russell has many surprises up his sleeve for the final three films, with the return of some familiar faces and new challenges for Endeavour and Thursday to face before the final goodbye!”

Endeavour first aired as a single film in 2012 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Inspector Morse‘s television debut. Since then, 32 more films have been broadcast with a further three currently in production, bringing the total to 36.

Endeavour screens in Australia on ABC.

  1. I loved the original Morse. I loved the Pilot of Endeavour (especially John Thaw in the rear view mirror). I knew this series would have to end some time, because Morse is older when that series begins. I think everyone involved have done an incredible job. Congratulations to everyone, and though it’s sad to see it end, we knew it must end some day. I also always wondered if Lewis might make a cameo somewhere (but they didn’t meet until the 1st episode of Morse, so I’m not sure how it might work).

  2. Sad to see it go, but I noticed in the most recent season there were a couple of Easter egg references to things in the Thaw series, so the end was nigh. I know that when Colin Dexter died, he put in his will that Morse ‘dies’ when the series finishes. It’s very much wishful thinking on my part, but a Kevin Whately cameo would be nice.
