Renewed: RFDS

“We’re thrilled to bring the heart, humour and adrenaline-pumping action of this beloved grand-scale series back to screens."

EXCLUSIVE:

Good news for local drama with Seven renewing its outback medical series RFDS for a second season in 2023.

The Endemol Shine Australia was the #1 Australian drama of 2021 and has three Logie nominations including Most Popular and Most Outstanding Drama. Season one drew a national season average of 1.09 million viewers, with an average BVOD per episode of 110,000 people.

Returning cast will include Emma Hamilton, Stephen Peacocke, Rob Collins, Justine Clarke, Ash Ricardo, Jack Scott, Sofia Nolan, Rodney Afif, Ash Hodgkinson and Thomas Weatherall.

Production will commence in 2023. Writers Ian Meadows, Claire Phillips are returning with scripting underway. The series will be produced by Imogen Banks and Sara Richardson and executive produced by Julie McGauran for Seven.

Seven’s Chief Content Officer, Entertainment Programming, Angus Ross, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the heart, humour and adrenaline-pumping action of this beloved grand-scale series back to screens. RFDS was an incredible success in 2021, which is in no small way a result of the important role it plays in telling the stories of the real Australian heroes in the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”

Endemol Shine Australia Chief Executive Officer, Peter Newman, said: “We are so excited to bring back RFDS for a much-anticipated second season; and to return to working with our incredible cast and creative team. Partnering again with the RFDS, we will raise the stakes and showcase to audiences around the world the incredible work they do.”

Series Producer Imogen Banks told TV Tonight, “It’s extremely gratifying that audiences all over the world are embracing the series so warmly. Making RFDS was one of those rare magical experiences; we had an incredible cast and crew working closely with the actual RFDS, who were extraordinarily generous with their time, expertise and assets. And we got to do it all in beautiful Broken Hill.

“I can’t wait to head back out into that addictive, mind-blowing landscape.”

RFDS Director of Brand and Communications, Lana Mitchell, said: “We’re delighted that RFDS will be coming to screens again soon. The drama has been hugely popular and resonated heavily with audiences both in Australia and abroad. We continue to support it with access to our bases, staff and livery.”

Just a year after Eliza left Broken Hill behind, much has changed, with lives at RFDS South East progressing at a rapid rate. The determined team will face some of their most confronting challenges to date – in the air, on land, with each other, and within themselves – set against the isolation, beauty and brutality of the outback.

Based on remarkable real-life stories and filmed on location in and around Broken Hill, RFDS tells the stories of doctors, nurses, pilots and support staff in the Royal Flying Doctor Service as they navigate emergency retrievals across some of the most inhospitable places in the country.

Banijay Rights handles international distribution for RFDS, which has already proven popular with international buyers. Deals for the first series have been secured with More 4 in the UK, PBS in the US, TV4 in Sweden, SBS in Belgium, Talpa in the Netherlands and TVNZ in New Zealand, with others to be announced soon.

  1. Mr Crawford managed to make 221 episodes over 6 seasons for 9, and now 7 can’t afford more than 8 episodes. One would think the revenue from the above overseas sales would make it viable.

  2. This is the best news to wake up to. My sister just asked me last night if RFDS was getting a second season and I said no, going by what I read a while back.

Hope we don’t have to wait too long though.

  3. Reminds me of rescue special ops, could have cast more popular drama stars like Celia Ireland Tammy macintosh , Conrad Colby, Alexandra Davis etc……

  4. It was well received, rated very well for a local drama and generated overseas sales from stations that would like more than 8 episodes. Yet it has taken a year to get a second season. I guess Seven had enough dram points with Home And Away and Miss Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries for 2022.

  5. Awesome win for Aussie drama! I’m actually a little surprised the show has been renewed for another season. Really enjoyed the first and hopefully the second’s going to be even better!

  6. Well this is a pleasant surprise. I assumed this was not going to happen. Visually, it looked very expensive to make so even though it was warmly received (ratings more than decent and critical feedback) I just assumed the financials couldn’t make it work. Perhaps they needed the extra year to secure sufficient international sales. Either way, positive news. A free good uncomplicated drama that showcases outback Australia really well.

  7. Wait what??? This is bloody awesome news. Just made day. Loved this show and thought it was over. Glad its been given another season. Yay!!! 🥰
