SBS backs news coverage on Ukraine invasion

SBS Chair George Savvides defends "strong and impartial coverage of the conflict" in Ukraine.

SBS Chair, George Savvides, this week stood by SBS’s coverage of the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

It followed the SBS Chair being named on a long list of Australians, including television CEOs, Chairs and reporters being indefinitely banned from entering Russia, accused of of promoting a “Russophobic agenda.”

“The SBS Board and management are proud of and stand by our coverage of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Across all our services, including SBS World News and our SBS Russian and SBS Ukrainian language services, we have provided audiences in Australia with strong and impartial coverage of the conflict. It is a clear demonstration of the vital role of a free press within our democracy,” said Savvides.

  1. And also some partial coverage straight from the Russian Ministry Of Propoganda. Some of which they pulled, but yesterday there was a decidely pro-Russian story quoting only Moscow about the glorious victories in Donetsk and Luhansk on Al-Jazeera (which SBS has a disclaimer on claiming it’s not them).
