Magnum P.I. rescued

It's a reprieve for the rebooted crime series with Jay Hernandez.

Rebooted crime series Magnum P.I. has been thrown a lifeline with two more seasons from NBC, despite being axed by CBS after 4 seasons.

The series stars Jay Hernandez in the role originally performed by Tom Selleck.

NBC has ordered 20 new episodes to be split over two seasons, with an option for more.

The series also features Perdita Weeks as Juliet Higgins, Zachary Knighton as Orville “Rick” Wright, Stephen Hill as Theodore “TC” Calvin, Tim Kang as Det. Gordon Katsumoto, and Amy Hill as Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta.

On CBS the show averaged 7.2 million total viewers, in Live + 7 data.

It screens in Australia on FOX One, likely to remain its local playout.

  1. CBS doubled down on NCIS, NCIS LA, NCIS Hawaii, NCIS Sydney and FBI, FBI Most Wanted and FBI International which will fill up 3 nights a week plus SWAT (taking Magnum P.I.’s slot accompanying Blue Bloods). and the Equalizer. The only “original” show they have added in the last few years is East New York, which is their 5th New York crime drama and basically New Amsterdam set in a NY police precinct. Magnum P.I. was the highest rating cancelled show. It’s basically one season of 20 eps, that they will air as two block of 10 eps, presumably as a mid-season replacements. It would help fill the gap created by New Amsterdam’s shorted final season. And if Lopez v Lopez or the Quantum Leap reboot or Night Court sequel don’t get picked up.

  2. Was a bit of surprise when Magnum P.I. (MPI) got axed I must admit, as even just on a Friday with Final Ratings in the US it was getting 5.3 million and made a good double for CBS with Blue Bloods (BB) after it picking up 5.9 million owning the 9pm-10pm/10pm-11pm slot in Total viewers. *Both were getting MPI 0.48 and BB 0.45 in the 18-49 Sales Demo Ratings (all TV households), 25-54 in that of MPI 0.72 plus BB 0.68 and in the Demo Shares (% of TV households wit a TV turned on) MPI 9.2 and BB 12.1 which on a Friday Night for the US is good as advertising wise they’re looking to get busy during the week Families to Grocery Stores, Hardware Stores and etc., (much like here for Fridays really).

It kind of smacked of CBS saying we’re only going to do one Show in a Hawaii and we’re betting our money on the new NCI: Hawaii, so bye bye Magnum PI, so not surprised NBC picked it up.
