Vale: Lenny Von Dohlen

Actor Lenny Von Dohlen, best known for Twin Peaks, has died.

Actor Lenny Von Dohlen, best known for Twin Peaks, died recently aged 63.

His sister Catherine Von Dohlen announced his death last week morning on Facebook. No cause of death was given.

“The world lost a magnificent man on July 5. Brother Len was passionate about everything and everyone. He was always leading; whether it be riveting conversation, an artistic creation or a trip to new places. He loved a good laugh. He continues on his spiritual journey. Living life full in his memory.”

Von Dohlen played agoraphobic Harold Smith on Twin Peaks and the prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Sheryl Lee’s character, Laura Palmer, gave Harold her secret diary, and after her murder, her friend Donna Hayward befriended Harold while investigating Laura’s death. However, Harold’s story came to an end when Donna tried to steal the diary and he later hanged himself, losing his faith in human decency.

His other credits included Home Alone 3, Tender Mercies, Bird of Prey, One Good Turn, Cadillac and episodes of Miami Vice, The Equalizer, Walker Texas Ranger, Red Dwarf, The Pretender Psych and The Orville.

  1. I let out a “oh nooooooo” when I heard the news last week.

I loved him and his character almost immediately when binging on the entirety of Twin Peaks a year ago. By far my favourite character on the show (Peggy Lipton’s Norma a close second, also RIP), and I hated that they had killed off his character so soon. Harold even had his own theme on the show which is beautiful and haunting.

I had since sought a copy of Electric Dreams, which I also loved (how could you not have mentioned that of all his roles?), but unfortunately, his career didn’t seem to take off in any major way, primarily assuming bit parts in various TV shows and indie films.

He hardly aged at all over the years, and I thought that he would have had many more years in him yet. Rest in peace, Lenny.
