The Good Doctor looks to be getting a legal spin-off, The Good Lawyer, according to US reports.
A ‘backdoor pilot’ is planned for The Good Doctor from executive producers/co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman, according to Deadline.
The Good Lawyer will centre on Joni, a 20-something woman who battles OCD but is a brilliant lawyer and gets to be a defense attorney for Dr. Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore) who finds himself in legal trouble.
Two characters from The Good Lawyer will appear in Episode 613 of The Good Doctor, with the roles yet to be cast.
Living with OCD, Joni has never wanted to be treated differently and is often embarrassed of her symptoms. She is a great lawyer, using her attention to detail, compulsive over-thinking and analytical skills as a superpower, but was forced to threaten to sue the firm (for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act) when they tried to fire her because of her peculiar behaviours.
Meanwhile a sequel to 1990s legal drama Ally McBeal is also in the works.
US network ABC is also set to focus on a young Black woman who joins the original show’s law firm. The new protagonist is believed to have a connection to the original cast – she is the daughter of Ally’s roommate Renée Raddick, a district attorney who later went into private practice played by Lisa Nicole Carson.
It has also been reported that Flockhart has been approached to appear in the sequel and executive produce it, though a final decision hasn’t been made yet.
The original Ally McBeal ran from 1997 – 2002.

Simply do we need this?
I was expecting the inevitable, and just like that (pun intended) the first thing that they mention about the new Ally McBeal character is that she’s black. I thought the developed world, you know, developed beyond such vapid superficiality and regressive rhetoric. I guess this character doesn’t have much of a personality, then? Does she even have a name?
