Hughesy doesn’t discuss Masked Singers with his kids (but apparently they picked Mirrorball)

Not much is stacking up as readers call foul on Dave Hughes correctly pinpointing a member of the Pussycat Dolls.

A number of readers have expressed cynicism around Dave Hughes correctly guessing Melody Thornton as Masked Singer‘s very own Mirrorball, because his answer seemed to come from nowhere late in the final episode.

But also because the former Pussycat Doll isn’t exactly a household name in Australia.

How did someone so terrible with answers suddenly turn into Sherlock Holmes?

“I actually got my family to listen to Don’t Cha (Wish Your Girlfiend Was Hot Like Me). They listened closer than I did and they said ‘Who’s that voice?’ and I said ‘I don’t know.’ But I Googled that voice and it was Melody Thornton, one of the Pussycat Dolls!”

But was it really his genius kids or was it a helping hand from producers keen to get her name out there and stop the audience from collectively asking “Who?” when the mirrorball was removed?

The explanation also seemed to contradict Hughesy’s own words on The Project last night: “My own children who love the show, ask me who’s under the mask and I don’t tell them. Possibly because I can’t remember…. no, I do not tell anyone.”

The panel are indeed contractually forbidden from discussing the acts with family, friends, colleagues and media.

So given the first episode didn’t air until after the season was in the can, it’s clear Hughesy was discussing the acts with his kids.

Not much here is passing the pub test.

But if they really are that smart, maybe next year the panel should have a junior Hughesy on board instead of dad.

Update: On radio Hughes maintains, “No one gave me [Thornton’s] name….. I came up with it on my own! For God’s sake!'”

  1. He was discussing it with his family during recording before he knew who it was. He’s not allowed to discuss it once they have been revealed. No contradiction there. Why is this so hard to understand?

  2. No one on Twitter was buying it. Everyone was saying he was fed that information. I know of the Pussycat Dolls & some of their songs but could not name any of them.

  3. A friend of mine picked Melody Thornton after her second performance. I didn’t recognise her name at all but certainly knew the Pussycat Dolls. The same could be said of Michelle Williams, though. Most Australians wouldn’t know who she is but they’d probably know about Destiny’s Child. Mel B was definitely on the right track. It doesn’t make sense for producers to feed Dave Hughes Melody’s name. He could quite well have jumped on Mel’s bandwagon and Googled who else was in the PCD to come up with Melody.

  4. I posted under wrong bit. The reason why I was convinced that Sheldon Riley was Snapdragon was also because of the flamboyant costume. Snapdragon was pink. And it had wings. Sheldon usually wears flamboyant costumes and also with capes/wings – etc. Plus when on either BGT or USGT and or Eurovision, he also wore a white outfit with a white/clear jeweled face covering. He is always as elaborate/flamboyant as possible. Kudos to Chrissie Swan for also correctly guessing Sheldon and never swaying. I also knew he had Aspergers.

I will also say that to me he isnt a celebrity. He is still starting out. And, re the winner, Mirrorball, Ive never heard of Melody Thornton. And never a fan of Pussycat Dolls. Ive only just heard of them. Melody does have a great voice. I do feel for Sheldon for not winning. As you said, he’s never won a singing contest. But this was close. He came 2nd. So good on him for that.
