AFL Grand Final tops survey -but Nine steals week from Seven.

Outside primetime, 2.18m metro viewers was the lowest AFL Grand Final since OzTAM began -and enough for Nine to swoop in and win the week.

Saturday’s AFL Grand Final drew 2.18m metro viewers and has topped the survey year so far in 2022.

There were 1.07m viewers in Melbourne, 375,000 in Sydney and 300,000 in Perth. Another 783,000 were watching in regional areas, while more viewers were watching online, in pubs and parties around the county -Total TV numbers will be released next week.

But it was also the lowest metro figure for a Grand Final since OzTAM ratings began in 2001, a shadow of the 2020 / 2021 events which were held interstate and broadcast in primetime.

Last week was really Seven’s to lose, with the Brownlow Medal, Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and AFL Grand Final -but that’s just what happened in the end, with Nine claiming a win thanks to The Block, Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and NRL Finals.

While the big game was a walkover for the Cats, it also drives home calls for the AFL to maintain a primetime Grand Final.

It was also a weak week for 10, slumping to lows on Monday as it shunned the Funeral to a multichannel.

ABC News also topped multichannels last week thanks to Monday’s Royal Funeral coverage.

  1. It’s about what i thought it was going to be Geelong grabbed hold of the game early and Swans had no chance after that.I was extremely happy as i’m a Geelong supporter so i watched every minute of it.But if my team was not playing i probably would have given up at half time.Being not Prime time as well of course makes a difference as well as there is always more audience at night. Most people as a rule also prefer a day Grand Final.Channel 7 would be satisfied all things considered…Geelong Premiers 2022 GoCats 😀

  2. Makes sense numbers were down as we could all get out and watch elsewhere this year, also Sydney you’d think they would have tuned out at half time, usually depends on the teams in the finals as well, Geelong v Sydney maybe not as big an audience as some of the other big teams attract.

  3. This year’s GF was very unenjoyable not only due to the blowout but also because there was no post-match entertainment. Apart from Robbie Williams excellent pre-match entertainment, the half-time entertainment was dreadful with G Flip performing. I don’t know who G Flip is but she screamed ‘Go Pies” which was just as cringeworthy.
The Queen’s Funeral performed well on both ABC, Seven, Nine, 10Bold and SBS (if you combine the numbers together).

  4. Correct, none of Seven’s Grand Final coverage on Saturday would have counted towards the network TTL whereas both of Nine’s NRL Finals are included. The result of the week isn’t a massive surprise when you consider all of that.

  5. Aren’t Ratings only counted for Primetime 6pm to Midnight even on weekends, so wouldn’t that 30.2 for Seven exclude AFL Grand Final Ratings up until 6pm, or has something changed.
