Big names lining up for ABC’s Frankly

New Friday night show will draw upon former RN Breakfast host's interview skills and rapport with some very big names.

Some impressive guest names are lining up for ABC’s upcoming interview show, Frankly.

The show hosted by Fran Kelly is moving into Friday nights in October and set to capitalise on the former RN Breakfast host’s vast interview experience.

Over its 8 week run Kelly will be talking to the likes of Sandi Toksvig, Tim Minchin, Steph Tisdell, Richard E. Grant, Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris, Adam Goodes and Shaun Micallef, with music from artists such Vera Blue and Jimmy Barnes.

“What I’m learning in this business is that things change a lot,” Fran Kelly tells TV Tonight.

“People’s diaries and production schedules change, so things come in and out and that’s happening all the time. But I’m happy with where it’s heading. It’s a challenge in Australia.

“I remember once I looked at an old Graham Norton and it was Paul McCarney, Katy Perry, Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth, and thinking ‘Wow!’ But it was never going to be that either. It’s not an entertainment show. I mean, I hope it’s an entertaining show, but it’s not an entertainment show.”

The show will also introduce a whole host of ‘big brains’ to make viewers think differently about how they view the world.

“It will have entertainers, comedians and musicians. But it will also have astrophysicists, futurists, adventures and entrepreneurs and changemakers. It will have the whole lot.”

To be filmed in front of a studio audience, there’s also a house rock band -a nod to Kelly’s own early music roots.

It all kicks off 8:30pm Friday October 7 on ABC.

  1. Sounds like it could be another ABC woke fest and I class myself as being socially progressive but don’t like as others have put it like ‘preachy’ or unbalanced. (Q+A)
This show sounds like a good idea without a future. A viable time slot and some youth from the pool of talent already at the ABC could give this some legs.

    1. News has to be balanced, this isn’t news. There’s younger hosts getting a go on ABC such as Jan Fran, Alex Lee, Marc Fennell and recently Tom Ballard had his own show. Maybe we should be acknowledging a woman is being given a chat show when history has been largely the opposite?

  2. “The show will also introduce a whole host of ‘big brains’ to make viewers think differently about how they view the world.”……….hmmmmm interesting comment. ” to make viewer think differently”………

    1. To me that sounds a bit condescending and preachy. It wouldn’t be out of place to hear that sort of statement from Mormons as well. Overall it looks to be more Parkinson than Graham Norton.

  3. Finally an informative show we an sit back listen to music and tap our feet. Looking forward to the guests and what they have to say. Pity Rockwiz finished so good one and Thanks ABC from an ageing rocker.
