Con Girl true crime factual for Seven

4 part series to centre around life and lies of serial ‘con girl’ Samantha Azzopardi.

Seven will screen a 4 part factual series Con Girl, which centres around life and lies of serial ‘con girl’ Samantha Azzopardi.

It tells the stranger-than-fiction story of Azzopardi, who has amassed at least 70 false identities since she embarked on her career of deception as a 14-year-old girl from Brisbane. On the surface, Azzopardi is innocence personified, but behind the sweet facade is a brazen and sophisticated confidence trickster — and a psychological enigma.

Most con artists are middle-aged men, who typically target women and the most vulnerable for financial gain. Azzopardi, by contrast, doesn’t hurt, steal or want sex — although, as the series will reveal, her impact on her victims’ lives has been devastating.

In May 2021, she was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

Co-produced with CJZ and BossaNova Media, the series will also air on Paramount+ in the UK and Ireland.

CJZ executive producer and showrunner is Paula Bycroft (Deadly Women, The Good Cop for Foxtel) and CJZ’s head of factual, Andrew Farrell.

Paul Heaney, CEO of BossaNova, said: “Our involvement with Con Girl grew out of BossaNova’s first Development Day pitching event in 2021. CJZ brought the project to London, having already secured Network Seven’s backing, and we are delighted that Paramount+ has picked it up for the UK & Ireland too. Our Development Days aim to match promising ideas with the right commissioners and buyers to move them across the start line.”

  1. What’s with Seven and the focus on true crime. Is there not enough of it happening everyday in the world without highlighting it. There is a lot of influence out there already, I think this just makes thing even worst because people think it’s a good thing to emulate these crimes especially the younger generation who think “look at me aren’t I great” moment to post their crimes on social media. This not only plants the seed to walk on the wild side but it just adds fuel to an already ragging fire.
