TRT World channel moves from Foxtel to Flash

A requirement for captions on news services sees Turkish news channel exit Foxtel platform.

Turkish public broadcaster TRT World has departed the Foxtel platform, but is available via news streamer Flash.

TRT World Channel will no longer be available on Foxtel from 8 September 2022. TRT World will instead be available on Flash, our news streaming service, which is currently included as part of all Foxtel residential customer subscriptions. For help accessing their complimentary Flash subscription Foxtel customers can head to foxtel.com.au/contactus.

TV Tonight understands TRT World is not able to caption their service with is required of all news channels on cable & satellite from this year onwards.

The same captioning regulations don’t apply to SVODs, where Flash resides.

  1. @ David Knox – I’ve had a look at the TV guide today for the news channels and was surprised how much is not subtitled (CGTN Documentary and Al Jazeera in particular had no programs listed in the guide with subtitles). I checked ACMA and realized the quota is just 55% this financial year. So is it just a numbers game?

  2. Captioning for foreign sourced content has for a long time been a bugbear.

When it comes to SBS in Australia, for example, they’re supposed to have subtitles in English for foreign language news, but there are some sort of exemptions for SBS because of the technical and turnaround constraints.

TRT from Turkey is in English, though with the implementation of the British Sign Language legislation recently in the UK, I think there is an increased focus globally for captioning, subtitling, sign language, audio descriptions, multilingual audio and translations that will become more prominent and commonplace, more than before considering these aren’t new technologies, but the requirements are increasing.

Now is the time for broadcasters to prepare for these accessibility improvements in the upcoming years. There’s more work involved, though there are more viewers to gain and can secure from falling behind or being demoted.
