Nine exec producer rejects rumours of Carrie Bickmore joining Today

With no clear path on her immediate future, speculation has been rife about Carrie Bickmore's next step.

Since Carrie Bickmore’s announcement that she would depart The Project press have been speculating about her next move with considerable fuel around the idea show might join Nine shows … either A Current Affair or Today, take your pick.

On air Bickmore said she didn’t know what her next move is, which does feel somewhat surprising, but that she wanted to devote more time to family.

Sources have denied she will succeed Tracy Grimshaw as next anchor of A Current Affair.

Today show executive producer Steve Burling has also quashed suggestions she could join Nine’s breakfast show, which emerged from suggestions Ally Langdon could replace Grimshaw.

He took aim at one story published by Daily Mail.

There’s a few immediate problems with Bickmore joining Today, not the least of which is uprooting her Melbourne family to Sydney. There’s the early morning starts which also feel like they would contradict her public statements about family time.

Moving Ally Langdon from Today also creates new problems when she is working well with Karl Stefanovic. It took a few years for the show to settle with a new duo, post-Lisa Wilkinson. Yes, numbers are bouncing around lately. It had timeslot wins in June, July and August, before dropping and most recently finishing 26,000 behind on Tuesday. It’s a long game in this genre with habitual viewers. You really don’t get anywhere with quick changes.

ACA is also a solo hosting gig. That would mean Bickmore would have to forgo the chat and banter which has worked well for her at 10 -as well as going head to head with her current cast mates.

But she is eminently liked, and can arguably write her own ticket for her next gig, which is certainly great fodder for press yarns. 10 is also yet to clarify if she is staying with the network. Without a new gig that seems unlikely after November 30.

“We hope to work together again,” said Paramount’s Beverley McGarvey.

Meanwhile, Carrie is not doing interviews for now. Who can blame her?

  1. Certainly fascinated by what her next move will be. She is a great on air talent with her natural warm personality. But the project is the perfect show for her. ACA is not suited to her personally unless it changes format but no need due to good ratings. Breaky tv would suit her but how important is her family. Tonight show- she needs others to bounce off and will tv networks take the budget risk? Maybe a pre recorded interview program like Enough Rope. I think radio is her true love given her dad was involved in radio in WA. Time will tell I suppose

  2. A lot of speculation, he is mine for Carrie…..
In 2020 Carrie was approached to do 2 Day FM breakfast, but refused due to her work load with the Project and othe commitments.
As the current 2 Day – Dave Hughes team is not gaining any traction, this could be a legin for Carrie and Tommy Little, to steer a sinking breakfast ship into a new direction.

    1. Tommy and Carrie are both Melbourne based. That’s a big call for them both to move (more so with Carries kids). Extremely doubtful they’d have a Sydney only based show from Melbourne studios.

I’m not 100% sure but I think Tommy and Carrie are the closest in ratings to Novas drive time show that 2day FM have had in quite a while too(?).

      1. If they were to sign with 2day, I imagine they would broadcast from Melbourne, as I think Hughes does that from time to time…?
        Erin is Sydney based.
I thought Ed was based in Brisbane?
Either way it would be a different breakfast show and may even rate 😊

  3. Today and ACA really make no sense. Today too much of a slog for her and ACA just not inviting for her. I really think Carrie would make a perfect Tonight Show host. Probably the only job better than the one she already has. Maybe someone has thrown some dollars at her.

    1. totally agree, please don’t go to Today Carrie, pretty sure you’ll regret it. Your colleagues would simply not be in the same league as you & the others at the Project….
