Renewed: The Witcher

iam Hemsworth set to take over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia after Henry Cavill condirmed his exit.

Henry Cavill will exit Netflix fantasy The Witcher after the upcoming third season debuts, with Aussie Liam Hemsworth set to take over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia.

The series has been renewed for a fourth season.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement on Instagram. “In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

“As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure,” Hemsworth’s statement reads. “Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

A four-part prequel series starring Michelle Yeoh, The Witcher: Blood Origin, is also set to premiere on Christmas Day.

  1. I have been watching a YouTube debate about Henry Cavill just missing out on becoming 007 James Bond in 2007, he was considered too young back then so after Daniel Craig won the part Henry ended up in the role of Superman instead. This seems to be the way for Henry’s career, one thing leads to another although in this case The Witcher was Henry’s pet project with him being a primary force for its production being green lit by Netflix. With Cavill now apparently returning to DC’s Superman role the reason for his departure from The Witcher does look explainable, but rumour mongering, as it is in Hollywood, still speculate that Henry didn’t like the creative direction the Witcher show and Netflix was heading.

    1. Of course it’s that he didn’t like the creative direction. He’s publicly spoken out about getting in arguments with the writers about things not sticking to the source material. Basically saying he was the only one interested in trying to be faithful. Then just last week a writer who worked on the show said that some of the other writers actively disliked the source material.
I honestly don’t understand why Hollywood keeps getting IP and then hiring people who don’t want to adhere to it. So many IPs now seem to be written by people who don’t like or don’t understand or know the IP.

      1. Maybe there’s a culture of narcissistic superiority among some executive / producer regimes in Hollywood, or is it all about the money, where mucking about with intellectual property will allegedly make extra profits from merchandise sales, such as happened with Star Wars and Star Trek, though recent stories suggest that that didn’t work well either, especially with the fans. Dwayne Johnson has said that he worked for six years lobbying with his team to get Black Adam on cinema screens and he was part of the strategic process to get the DC universe franchise back on track again after David Zaslav became Warner Bros CEO, because of this Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill came back into the DC fold (now under a new creative management) to bring all the main DC characters back together again, albeit with a new Flash. So it’s over to you DC fans.

        1. It’d vary for each project but I assume in general for these kinds of shows you have executives making a financial decision who don’t know the material. Then writers will jump onboard, even if they don’t know the material in depth. They enjoy it on some level, or maybe not. They want to add their take on it and start adding and changing stuff. Not knowing the material well enough, or maybe not even understanding it means they add things and make changes that go against the material. Contradicts and messes up where the originals go. As well as getting focused on their new stuff. Where conflicts between the source material and the adaptation get The whole thing becomes fan fic, and not really an adaptation. Then when the fans complain, they get told they are toxic as if that would offend them.

  2. Oh no. As much as I love the Hemsworths Cavill was perfect as the Witcher. He even said he’d played the game for many hours to base his character on him as much as possible.

  3. Hopefully this will be a smooth transition not like some shows when actor/actress leaves they often don’t have the same impact as the original because you get used to them seeing the same person in that roll, but I’ll still watch and see how it goes.
