So pre-covid in 2019 NRL GF was the five city metro audience (Sydney 832k, Melbourne 320k, Brisbane 534k, Adelaide 87k, Perth 93k) totalled 1.866 million, which was Roosters (14) v Raiders (8), 2018 was Roosters (21) v Storm (6), which averaged 2.141 million viewers in the capital cities, however of course that pulled in 551k in Melbourne.
So a 195,000 drop on 2019, which yep can be explained away with people tuning out of a dull game I guess. For the record 2020 was 2.103 million and 2021 was 2.202 million, 2020 had Melbourne Storm in and 2021 didn’t, Penrith were in all 3 (2020/21/22) winning 2, so may have been some not watching because of that.
Very surprised at NRL GF rating – expected much higher. Guess it shows, like the AFL GF, that people won’t watch if there isn’t a contest
Chuck in the BVOD and it will still be underwhelming. Playing the game at 8pm on a Sunday night with no public holiday for 40% of the population the next day reflects the NRLs view that it is still an eastern states game. Very small minded. Add to that the fact it’s a long weekend and you have to think not all ratings boxes were active and in use. A clever organisation would maximise the potential reportable reach of such a big game. The nrl just doesn’t get it I’m afraid.
Don’t know if there was a public holiday in the other states whether the ratings would be higher- more people are away. The AFL has a public holiday but has the game on Saturday, but in the afternoon, which is a ratings killer in eastern states. Don’t think either has hit the sweet spot
