Under Investigation: Oct 24

Episode on the cruise industry, pulled back in July, gets a screening tonight on Nine.

An episode of Under Investigation on the cruise industry, initially planned for July is getting a screening tonight on Nine.

Back then the episode was set to report on “the dark side of the cruise industry and whether passenger ships should be sailing again.” But Nine also had cruise sponsors and partners for programmes such as Today.

Here is the synopsis for tonight:

Travellers onboard cruise ships have seen violent crime, pollution, and now a COVID crisis. As the industry resumes, Liz Hayes and a panel of world-class experts examine whether it has learnt from past lessons.

8:50pm Monday on Nine

  1. Surely Liz could be given more substantial things to investigate besides investigating things that have a use by date. Are we ever going to move forward or just re hash the same old same old as entertainment. Every channel covered this “sinking ship”.

    1. True, but in the case of COVID-19, there is a possibility that we could see new variants in Australia (there could be a twin flu and COVID-19 in Asia in the leadup to their winter and the same for our summer) and I feel that we have reopened to cruise ships too soon, but we need to appeal to the A Current Affair viewers who complained about not going on a cruise while many people couldn’t even see their families. So while Australia have lifted restrictions (too soon I feel), I feel that this story’s use by date is far from certain (Spoiler: It has not passed yet).

  2. Bury this in a timeslot where you know you’ll be clobbered.

That way, it makes you look as if you’re serious about cruise ships negligence, but at the same time you don’t upset one of your loyal customers because few are going to see it.

    1. I remember posting in the original thread that shows like Today had competitions to go on a cruise and since then A Current Affair had a story on people excited to go on a cruise ship as well as having a competition to go on one of those Virgin Cruises while at the same time neglecting the outbreaks on cruise ships. I agree that the burying of this story in a timeslot where no one will be watching it is to portray the broadcaster in question (in this case Channel Nine) as being serious about negligence on cruise ships, but don’t want to offend the cruise ship industry. But remember that the goal of Channel Nine is to promote the interests of the cruise ship operators and pretty much ignore the problems such as the fact that the cruise ship is a petri dish for COVID-19 due to limited space and tight living quarters.
