Who would Fran Kelly love to interview on Frankly?

Fran Kelly reveals her dream guest for her ABC interview show.

With 2 of her 8 Frankly episodes already under her belt, Fran Kelly revealed to TV Tonight her dream guest for her interview show.

“I’d really love to have Jane Fonda on the couch,” she said.

“I did a series of conversations with her a few years ago, when she was out here, and I did some events with her and she was fantastic. Interesting, funny, engaging, and genuine- talk about a big brain, she’s got one!

“Since then she’s gotten more engaged on a whole range of issues. She’s a woman in her ’80s not only working on Grace & Frankie, she’s got a couple of movies in the works and she’s working full tilt and loves that.

“She’s also completely engaged in ideas for the future with her Fire Drill Fridays, getting arrested and politically is so engaged.

“She’s just an inspiration for what she calls ‘the third chapter’.”

Frankly screens 8:30pm Friday on ABC.

  1. I think it is very much on the **very** light entertainment side of the spectrum. An interview starts and just as it starts to get up to something interesting, it stops. It is neither informative nor entertaining and sits in a nether world of nothingness. It seems to me to be a gift given to Fran Kelly to do something that she wanted to do. The ABC either have to re-jig the format or sit comfortably with the very low ratings. Production costs will kill it off after one season.

I prefer the longer format interviews. Andrew Denton was a master of it and I am really enjoying the Kurt Fearnley series of one + one. I could see Fran being offered her own series of one + one, given they now seem to have a rolling cast of interviewers each focusing in on their special interest area – perhaps feminism might be Fran’s speciality.

  2. gee i actually kept forgetting this was on, maybe others did too & hence the low ratings? I already have alot of shows to watch though, i timeshift/record alot on my pvr so find that if i mean to stream something it kinda gets put on the back burner so to speak.

  3. I doubt Frankly will survive its first season. First week had Gardening Australia on 386,000 and Frankly 305,000. Second outing has Gardening Australia stable at 371,000 but Frankly down to 218,000. I’m no numbers man but I think that equates to losing roughly a third of your viewers in just a week. I’m sure a repeat of a British detective series would perform a lot better at a lot less cost. Why is the ABC so like the Hotel California in regards it’s ” retiring ” stars ?
You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave … Make the break and get some new blood / new ideas ABC !

    1. The interview were pretty good, and the interviewees interesting especially in the first episode. The ABC doesn’t care that much about ratings, especially on a Friday night and it has repeat airing an iView figures to incorporate. As long as they can find quality guests there is no reason it shouldn’t continue. The major critism was some lack of depth, which could easily be fixed by extending it.

  4. Enjoyable, light hearted and interesting to watch something different. ABC do repeat their shows so there are no clashes with others I watch, pity Seven didn’t get the Memo.
