60 Minutes: Nov 6

This Sunday, the battle for Taiwan and the risk of real conflict.

This Sunday on 60 Minutes, conflict surrounding Taiwan and how our borders are compromised.

The Battle for Taiwan
It’s a battle most of the world dreads – China vs Taiwan – but it seems the likelihood of conflict is increasing by the day. Chinese President Xi Jinping has made it his number one priority for Taiwan, which he sees as a renegade Chinese province tobe brought back under the control of Beijing. And his threat couldn’t be any clearer: if Taiwan resists, Xi will turn the modern, free-wheeling democracy – with a population similar to Australia – into a bloody battlefield. As Tom Steinfort reports, what’s playing out in Taiwan right now could shape the world for decades to come, forever marking the region as the place where World War III began.

Trafficked
Politicians are always quick to shout the mantra that Australia’s laws on borderm rotection, who’s allowed into the country and who’s kept out, are some of the toughest in the world. But why should we believe what we’re being told? Last week 60 Minutes, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald revealed how international criminals were circumventing laws and trafficking vulnerable Asian women to work in the sex industry here. This week Nick McKenzie’s special investigation continues with more explosive evidence proving just how easily our borders are being breached.

One Response

  1. Instead of nuclear escalation the West needs to support peaceful reunification based on terms of improved human rights and an improved political system. This crisis is an opportunity for the West to engage with China in addressing human rights and political system issues. It sounds impossible but It is actually possible by the power of God leading a group of nations that understand how to effectively engage China.. May God raise up the right leaders to bring peace to the region.
