Oops. And the award for Best Heavy Metal album goes to…

ARIA Awards didn't hold back when The Chats won for their blunt album title.

Warning: Language.

It’s not like they didn’t know who would win the Heavy Metal Album…

Last night’s ARIA Awards threw in the rock & roll then it awarded an award to Hard Rockers The Chats for their album “Get F***ed.”

Red Carpet co-host Lucinda Froomes got the name wrong and awarded it instead for “F*** You”, not exactly a title improvement at around 8:15pm.

To be fair the show was classified M so there’s no risk of a breach, but it was suprising nevertheless.

And as for that Olivia tribute… please refer to P!nk.

  1. I didn’t see it because I’m overseas. So it was worse that the one about 12 years ago that was held out the front on the Opera House? The one there they got Independent MP Bob Katter to present Best Independent Act, Jessica Mauboy saying “de-butt album”, and Powderfing too busy socialising to hear their names ready out as winner. If it was worse than that one then that’s quite an achievement

It should go back to being produced by Rove’s production company. They always did it well

  2. Honestly! Who doesn’t love a F…. up on national TV, watch The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and see how The Great John Mellencamp told the audience how to f…. antisemitism when handing out an award. Or better still Farm Aide when the audience started singing the chorus of his “Jackie and Diane” song instead of the verse (now that was his best yet). YouTube is the go to for those gems.

  3. That whole segment was bizarre, throwing to a break midway through the list of winners, then backtracking to finish the list then throwing to another act then throwing to break again. Glad they had Nick Bennett back doing voice over instead of Richard Wilkins. As for Natalie Imbruglia, she can kind of hold a tune. Pink on the other hand owns the stage, and the stadium around it.

  4. I gave up on the ARIA awards years ago, because it has become too alternative and indie focused. Not even the hosts know who they are or the names of the songs and albums. Video Hits and The Loop have gone and public broadcasting plays alternative and indie, where as in the UK, public broadcasting is diverse and caters for everyone. There’s a platform in public broadcasting for the young boy or girl pop singer or groups that want to do pop. Where as with ABC’s Unearthed that’s on Triple J and Rage, it’s targeted to alternative and indie and stifles creativity.

The demise of the Australian music industry has been due to the lack of support for diversity in culture from the media. Rage tends to heavily focus on alternative and indie, where as the little two hour slot on Saturday morning when they play chart music is their highest rating part. There’s also some music snobbery in Australia as well. It’s not helpful and things have got to change.

    1. I agree that the prevalence of Triple J has kind of stifled Australian pop music, the only Aussie acts that go mainstream are the folk rock artists like Dean Lewis / Vance Joy that can get airplay on both alternative and pop radio. But if you listen to public radio on any given day they are playing more Australian pop, electronic and rap music than rock. Their demographic is so laser-focussed on young people that a lot of people miss it, and the rest of our music scene is so suffocated (we only have two major labels now) that they don’t get played anywhere else.

I disagree that this is the “demise” of Aussie music but that is just my personal music preference speaking. And yes this broadcast was one of the worst I’ve ever seen and is a disservice to a lot of the great talent on stage.

      1. I’m vintage and the problem has also been a lot of the Aussie rock/pop bands have all aged, music tastes have changed and sadly a lot of Australian rock/pop music doesn’t get enough air play. 4KQ in Brisbane changed to a sports station so the music got thrown out with the bath water and unfortunately that’s not the only station it’s happen to over the year.s I’ve resorted to MTV channels for my rock fix but I have to pay. As for CMT is not much better, but as they saying goes…“If I can’t go down Rockin I ain’t goin down at all” (and I have the t-shirt to prove it)😂 I’ll leave it there when it comes to rap🤮

      2. Same could be said for the Countdown Award days and the TV Week King of Pop days, it was very much what Countdown played with Triple M in various states. King of Pop days it was what 3XY in Melbourne and 2SM in Sydney did they had the Music Survey Charts and all, both initiating Rocktober here.

Here in Melbourne Triple R started up in 1976 and 3PBS in 1979 against a backdrop of all that to cater for what was missing, Double J much the same in Sydney. It’s hard to believe now when you listen to Classic Rock Radio now, but even the likes of Hunters and Collectors, Midnight Oil, The Sunnyboys, Painters and Dockers really only got played on public radio (and Double J). It was also those that the likes of Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Tangerine Dream and etc. plus early Hip-Hop from The Sugarhill Gang, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force and etc., got played, plus other styles (believe it or not 3AK used to be the Heavy Metal Station as well).

        1. Got that a bit wrong as Countdown was pretty much tied to 3XY and 2SM as well, Triple M didn’t come until later and of course was EONFM in Melbourne (1980) lead by Glenn Wheatley with Lee Simon and Billy Pinnell who left 3XY to start with EON. So they where more tied in with Nightmoves (1976-1984) and Sounds (1975-1987) with bit of Rock Arena thrown in than Countdown. Ah the days of rushing down to Brash’s to pick-up the 3XY Music Survey and buying Juke Magazine for all the music news, but best stop now before I go way off-topic.

    2. And yet I doubt there are many Alt music lovers who would bother to watch it. I certainly didn’t bother. The Alt music scene seems to be better represented by the QMusic Awards in my state (Qld).

  5. The Arias looked more like a High School production especially when compared to the AMAs.
The stage looked dingy at times & I had to turn off after the tribute to Archie Roach. Jess Mauboy & Budgeray were great but Thelma Plum mumbled so inaudibly I thought she was have a health scare.
I turned back & caught some of Dami Im’s Judith Durham tribute which was good but glad I missed the Olivia tribute (yes David Pink was far superior.
G-Flip was a disaster as co host.
Showing my age but there was too much grunge & not enough class
