Report: Networks to meet IOC

Next rights expected to encompass Paris, Los Angeles and Brisbane events.

Networks will meet with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officials in Sydney this week.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports Nine Entertainment Co, Seven West Media and Paramount had arrangements to meet with two key stakeholders from the IOC.

The prospective deal would include the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, as well as the Winter Olympic Games over this period.

The deal could include Los Angeles 2028 and the Winter Olympic Games at Milan Cortina 2026 and 2030, which is due to be awarded next year.

Nine flew Today host Karl Stefanovic to Lausanne in April as part of a network pitch for the rights with the specific aim of ensuring they won the rights for Brisbane 2032.

No binding or non-binding offers for the rights are expected to be made this week.

Nine, Seven and Paramount declined to comment.

  1. Agreed seven have their plumbing in order with 7+. After a fair bit of criticism with Rio, very hard to fault seven with the 2021 or Winter Olympics. Logic says seven will make a lowish bid for test cricket only (and based on media speculation, this will most likely allow Paramount to successfully bid for all the cricket) liberating funds for Olympics and Comm games. Presumably nine will also go hard for Olympics even if only to up the prices. I think for Olympics, seven have an exclusive window to negotiate. Not sure about Comm games though.

  2. I’d like to hope Seven keeps the Olympics. Nine were terrible when they did London. I remember it for all the wrong reasons and honestly i feel like if they got it, they’d put it behind Stans paywall for the most part and Eddie would be front and centre. Seven did an incredible job with Tokyo 2020 and really raised the bar. Gave us every event live on 7Plus. Sure, it wasn’t perfect but it gave you choice when you wanted it.

  3. As long as whoever has the Olympics streams every sport, every event free. That was the best thing about Seven last year for Tokyo – could watch anything you wanted to at any time, anywhere, regardless of what was airing linear.

  4. I would hope that 7 keeps the rights. 9 coverage a number of years ago was horrid. 7 is the home of the olympics and it is hard to think of them on any other nextwork.

    1. If channel 7 wins it I hope they update their outdated 720P HD on 7plus ,should be 1920×1080 FHD all the way ,and yes I’d love 4K too but I doubt we’ll get that.
